B.J. Penn 'guarantees' he'll fight at UFC 196; potentially against Dennis Siver

B.J. Penn fully expects he'll make his return to the Octagon on March 5. And it probably won't be against Nik Lentz.

The UFC Hall of Famer, one of just two fighters to hold UFC titles in two weight classes, "guarantees" he'll be fighting at UFC 196 on March 5 in Las Vegas, MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday's edition of UFC Tonight.

While there's no official opponent lined up, word has it that veteran Dennis Siver has emerged as a possible opponent for the former welterweight and lightweight champ.

Penn engaged in an war of words online with longtime prelim competitor Nik Lentz dating back several months, and the two got into it once again once Penn began training at JacksonWink MMA in Albuquerque in recent weeks.

But after Lentz overplayed his hand with a lengthy list of demands on Penn in order to make what would have been by far the highest-profile fight of Lentz's career, Penn has set his sights elsewhere, with Siver the name which has most often come up.

Penn (16-10-2) retired after a one-sided loss to Frankie Edgar on July 6, 2014 in Las Vegas. He finished his career on a 1-5-1 stretch, during which he fought at welterweight, lightweight, and finally featherweight.

Siver (22-11, 1 NC) lost both of his fights in 2015, a second-round TKO to Conor McGregor on Jan. 18 and a decision to Tatsuya Kawajiai on June 20.

He would get mopped by pretty much anyone in the top 30 at this point. He's slow, stiff, and his head snaps back with ever shot he takes. He was once the best lw but he can't keep up with these new school guys. I can see him beating someone in a similar boat as him, like a clay guida, but that's it. He would get picked apart by any decent striker ... Hope some anomaly stops him from entering the cage again, he is going to get hurt and also he doesn't need to be taking that damage in sparring either.

Dennis Siver is ranked #20, so we're going to find out one way or the other. Tippy toe BJ lasted until the 3rd round against Edgar, so it becomes a question of whether BJ is actually physically too old or whether he's been on a mental skid that caused him to self sabotage his own career and legacy going back to the second Edgar fight, and increasing in the every fight since (Matt Hughes first round KO aside obviously). Jackson - Winkeljohn's is the end of the line for Penn, but whether that's one more fight or five is going to depend on how much he actually has left, no more "what if" and blaming others for bad decisions he signed off on. As much as I hated watching a tired, unprepared, too small for the division BJ become a punching bag in the second round against Nick Diaz, at least he had his moments in that fight. The fight with Rory is the one that sticks with me. I couldn't find anything positive to take from that fight, and if you'd told me then that BJ would still be fighting in 2016, I would've been very worried for his long term health.

He's 43rd according to Home, which includes fighters from different organizations, like Bellator, WSOF, etc. I used a different website for the #20 ranking. Dennis Siver is still a top 30 UFC featherweight, in my opinion.

off topic but wouldn't it be cool if a hundred billion dollar company bought the rights to MMA events and then had UFC vs WSOF or shit like that....................like the UFC shouldn't play matchmaker but rather it should be a team employing highly skilled fighters that participate in a bigger organization against other teams like WSOF or strikeforce or bellator
