It's been a long time since Cain Velasquez has been pictured with his fist clenched in the air. The UFC's Mexican figurehead has been absent from the mixed martial arts arena for what's seemed like an eternity. The heavyweight champion was purged from prize-fighting competition aftersuffering a devastating knee injuryduring training. The ravaged knee of Velasquez saw to it that the champ sat by idly while his heavyweight adversaries jousted among each other to further their quest for UFC gold.
While AKA's flagship fighter sat on the sidelines, Fabricio Werdum and Mark Hunt locked horns in a battle for the heavyweight interim strap at UFC 180. The Brazilian submission ace stunned the Mexico City locals with a fight-altering flying knee in the 2nd round which crumpled the Super Samoan. Pursuing the finish, Werdum pounced on the former K-1 champ with an onslaught of ground strikes to see off the hardened New Zealand native.
The emphatic victory secured the interim title around the 37-year-old's waist, but the Brazilian must now contend for the real thing...

I think this will be a decent fight if Cain states health. Werdum looks like an idiot standing there with a fake belt. The interim title is nothing more then a ticket to fight. If Cain wins, does he get both belts? Why not since he earned it right?

Werdums guard and BJJ will be the difference in this fight. If he can control Cain and work enough submissions off his back, to keep Cain thinking, it could be a good fight. If he can't, I can see Cain finishing him or winning an easy UD.

Werdum is tricky man. The trap he set for Hunto was awesome and leads me to believe him when he says he dropped onto his back to entice Fedor into his guard.

this one is going to be interesting.who know what cain looks like after knee surgery and such a long layoff.before cain looked like a destroyer .on the other hand werdum has greatly improved under raphael corredero , just ktfo mark hunt and was the first man to defeat fedor.i dont think this is an easy fight for either man but i hope werdum wins just so we can see the heavyweight strap defended on a regular basis

cain hasn't fought since october of 2013, so there is a real need for an interim title, or stripping the champ of their belt to be earned again once they're healthy. when champs stay hurt for so long, it fucks up the weight classes, so there is no reason to call a great fighter an idiot.

I think if a champ can't defend his belt within one calendar year they should either 1) Make an interm title or 2) strip the champ and make a title fight match up between #1 and #2 contenders.

I think anyone who doubts Werdum, simply cannot look past him as a gatekeeper type of fighter from his Pride days.
He is so beyond that now.

Werdum has outstruck Travis Browne on the feet, in dominating fashion
Werdum has knocked out Mark Hunt on the feet-who does that?

Werdum has submitted the #2 and #1 best heavyweights of all time in Nog and Fedor

That above is enough to make him the FAVORITE. Dude outstrikes the best strikers, and out grapples the best grapplers. Plus he's funny and smart, the guy is very underrated.

As much as I like Cain, he should've been stripped imo. But get a title shot first fight back

I dont agree with interim belts, if the champ is out past a set date, then strip them. Nascar doesnt give interim race winners nor does MLB NFL NHL or NBA.

Two years ago I felt Werdum would stop Cain.
A year ago I yhought he'd stop him.
After this last delay, that I believe will push Cain to 31 yo. and Werdum to 38, it just may be the difference.
Yes, that extra 6-8 months.

Now, both in prime, which seems like recently, I'd still pick Werdum.
He's stronger, taller, and has a great style matched with physical attributes to pull off the upset.
And I'd give overall striking SKILL to Werdum as well.
Punching accuracy, knees, and world class bjj. All enemies of wrestle prone athletes.
It may sound crazy, but I think the delays have pushed the ball slightly in Cain's court.
But Werdum is tailor made for Cain, and I will be rooting for him.

Hoping for a win by Werdum. He is as good as he's ever been and Cain has been away for a LONG time.

Hopefully it'll be a war!

If there is ever gonna be a time, 1 fight , I root against Cain Velasquez, who is from my town, it's in this fight.

As mentioned above this isn't the werdum of old, this is a guy in the form of his life, a guy who tapped out fedor and knocked out mark hunt. Read that again. Hard work spent over years at the gym has paid off, and I beleive it's time.

It's werdum time

you don't have to agree with them, but there's no reason to say a fighter looks like an idiot because he has a belt that was given to him for an interim fight.
