I studied this fight so many times to watch Conor's habits, Nate's habits, and watched it all in slow motion. You all saw how the fight went, but if you're left still wondering about the finer details regarding technical stand up skills, I covered them for you folks.

Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz: Post Fight Technical Breakdown

A little summary of the piece
  • How Conor dealt with range
  • How Nate found that big shot
  • How they countered each other
  • Habits in Conor's and Nate's offensive styles (Boxing skills, etc.)
  • What were Conor's downfalls
  • Stockton slap compilation
As always, thanks for reading. Hope you enjoy it.

My thoughts:
One guy was taller, had his hands up, moved out the way of punches and used a jab.

The shorter guy had his hands on his waist, didn't move his head and only threw bombs. Then took the fight to the ground with a significantly better grappler when he unsurprisingly got punched on the chin and jaw.

Well done.

I noticed one small thing, in the art of the 1-2 (maybe write it like that and not like 12 :D), you wrote worst instead of worse.
I any case, great read as always, keep it up!

I missed some words about movement and footwork though. :)

AH bro, do you have a gif of Diaz doing the arm roll in front of Conor to mess his read/his own tells?

That made me smile during the fight :D

I am a huge fan of the Diaz brothers but if were being honest they are established gameplans to beat them out there already.
This fight reminded me of Ernesto Hoost vs Bob Sapp in that Mcgregor fought not just to win but to prove a point.
Both Hoost and Conor came out hard, headhunting and fought on emotion and they both paid for their pride.

While I suspect Conor likely possesses the tools to beat Nate I don't know if his ego would be happy with winning the fight with a more safe, less crowd friendly style. Would he be willing to avoid dangerous exchanges and pick his shots carefully and utilize the leg kicks that Nate has had issues with before?

If a rematch happens I feel Conor will be much too eager to make a statement with the first round KO he promised earlier and fall into exactly the same trap.

Conor wouldnt have nearly as many fans if he talked that much shit and then went out and Fitched someone or had a fight like Anderson and Maia.

I dunno bro, seemed to me like McGregor likes to fight long...there's nothing wrong with that...but I think Diaz's range was the main issue and the deciding factor. He had to change his game completely, look at his stance, the way he slipped..even the change from the straight to the overhand left is significant..He does not beat Diaz, still could give RDA a shot though, would have to not fight like that though.

I haven't seen either of the Hoost vs Sapp fights in ages but my point is that Ernesto choose to fight Sapp recklessly as a point of pride despite the level of danger engaging his opponent in that manner provided. I remember seeing Hoost leave his feet as the result of a punch in a way I've only seen duplicated by Little Mac in Punch Out. The other fight was a doctor stoppage if I remember correctly.

yup, in short, that's pretty much sums up a lot the fight. Nate's reaction was priceless.

That feedback is much appreciated. I knew writing it like that would be confusing.

I have a ton of gifs of the fight so I could. I'm just not sure what you're talking about specifically.

I think is what you might be talking about

I haven't realized how much the Diaz brothers do this to disrupt the opponent's rhtyhm but I've seen many times with his older brother too. I prefer feinting with the shoulders than with than hands.

Now that i'm thinking about Nick Diaz, there was a clinching habit both him and his brother both do to land shots. I wanted to mention it when Nate did it to Conor but I completely forgot to add out of the sea of gifs I made for this breakdown.

From what I've seen, a lot of fighting channels don't see a lot of good technical boxing in the Diaz brothers. I think that's why many people usually won't cover their fights either unless they're high profile. That might be the reason why I was the only one who bothered to breakdown Nate's fight with Micheal Johnson.

I like the Diaz brothers though. I enjoy the unique ways they disrupt rhythm to invite their punches.

His path away from those gameplans says a lot about Conor. He's got guts. Most fighters try to avoid the pocket with the Diaz brothers.

I can understand where Conor is coming from though. He has the ability to find your chin with his left. If that's working for you, it's hard to see why you'd want to go the leg kicking route. Hard to say if he'll use kicks next time. we've never seen him rematch someone to see his true ability to mature from a loss.

iirc one was a bullshit stoppage and one was a punch after the bell. but yeah Hoost put himself in unnecessary danger if he kept throwing low kicks he would've ended the Bob Sapp experiment right there.

True. But get a plan b.
But yeah, overconfidence.
