Towards the end of the second round, BJ could've shot for a desperation takedown, exposed his neck and tapped quickly to a RNC. It would've been harder to wrap our collective minds around considering the level of Penn's BJJ, but would anybody have blamed him at that point? Instead, he came out swinging in the third round, and was maybe takedown or significant punch or two away from winning the round. That's something that's been completely overlooked in the years since his fight with Diaz. He didn't give up, and he is a fighter that many have accused of being a front runner throughout his career. I never thought it was a case of being a front runner as much as it was his bad training camps in Hawaii, and a lack of strength and conditioning at the level needed in the modern MMA era, but there are many who do view BJ that way. Had he retired after the Diaz fight, it might not have been the worst thing since he never broke, and went out swinging. Time will tell.
