Maybe thats where our budget went. When I got to my unit in 2001 we had a 48 million dollar a year budget, three floats later i left in 2005 and it was down to 12 million a year to keep 35 LCAC's operational. It was pathetic that we had to steal parts from other boats in our own unit just to stay mission capable. Thats about the time we had to start buying our own batteries for our NVG's and shit like that. Fucking good times.

I was on harrier in the real navy.

They cut them to save money and sold the air frames to the usmc for about 35 quid. The also ditched the ark royal (carrier ) on the same round of cuts. They estimated it's would save 120 mil or so haha


Then Libya happened. They had no carrier (only one was in refit) nor anything that could even fly off it if they did. So they flew from Italy using tornados I think


Anyway that short term semi conflict cost over a billion iirc. Inside of a year of cutting them too

There is a method to that madness, or at least some convoluted thought process. It is very similar to what Ive seen in corporate America.

Lets say im in charge of, an airwing. I ground half of the wing and save 50 million a year for the 4 years im CO. I would recieve awards and all that shit. See I dont care about the 300 million it will cost to replace them in the future, thats someone elses mess to deal with. Right here, now in the moment I would be congratulated and have a feather in my cap, while at the same time fucking the next guy and tax payers over.

Funniest part is about a year after they ditched them I accepted redundancy that funded my move to the usa. First place I got a job? Yuma! What do they have there? A marine base flying harrier that just got life extended for another few years haha.

And when they got rid of them we were just completing upgrades to the fleet from gr7 to gr9 that had been going for a couple of years and cost more than 120 mil or whatever they thought they would save.

Recently I have become aware at how some companies and organizations are totally inept at managing funds vs manpower. Last week we laid off 20% of our manpower on site. 3 people from my team. I now have more toolboxes than mechanics. And we each have our own Polaris (2 spare, just in case)

Yet if 1 single person is sick or takes time off we would be really up against it, and be breaking written procedures , to actually perform our jobs. It's silly.

Yeh basically america has the av8b and the uk had the gr9. Same aircraft and engine and everything pretty much, apart from avionics equipment which is secret to each country. So they just pulled out all their gear and sold the shell so to speak

Look at Cherry Point and the CH-46. Using that type of thinking you could get another 50 years out of the harrier's.

Everyone assumed they were gonna get the axe and we would be going back. It's was never a fear for us. When it happened everyone was like, wait , wut?

When I was in kaf with 1 sqn on out final tour we got a double spread article because we had a 90+% serviceability rate and as a sqn had completed 1450 missions without missing one.

In fact it wasn't the last tour we did 2 months or so the year after because tornado missed the takeover date.

Never missed a single sortie.
