The hierarchy of divisions can stay rigid at times. In others, they change in an instant. When Stephen Thompson bested former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks inside four minutes into the the first round of their UFC Fight Night 82 clash last month, the victory had a disruptive effect.

Was Tyron Woodley still the top contender? How was Thompson able to stop Hendricks in less than one round when champion Robbie Lawler couldn't do it in 10? Where does this leave other top contenders?

The process of resorting is already in full swing, however, and Thompson is set to faceRory MacDonald in June at UFC Fight Night 89. It's arguably the most important fight of his career, but as Thompson sees it, it's not clear why he didn't get a title shot.

"After beating Johny Hendricks, the No. 2-ranked guy before and former welterweight champion. Some even say that his last fight was controversial with Robbie Lawler. I definitely wanted that fight. I know Rory MacDonald fought him last July, actually fought him the day before I fought Ellenberger, and ended up losing," he said on Monday's The MMA Hour.

"I thought they would give the new guy a shot. That's the fight I wanted and still want, but sometimes it doesn't go your way."

What lingers for Thompson is the prize beyond the prize: a UFC title shot. He simply can't shake it's allure and doesn't pretend to. He also believes with his resume adding MacDonald to his own victory column, they'll be left with no choice, but to award him what he wants.

"If they don't give it to me, there's something wrong," he argued. "I'm going to be pushing like crazy. I'm not the type of guy to really sit out and wait for anything, but I'm the no. 1 contender. They have to give it to me. I don't know why they wouldn't at that point.

"I know I can put on a good show and I know I can beat Robbie Lawler. I know I can be the welterweight champion."

I see a potential war, cause Firas usually comes with excellent gameplans and now Rory has experienced 5 rounds. They both have similar large frames and time and time again size and reach factors greatly. Wonder how wondeboys cardio is in the 4th or 5th round? they're both also warriors.

whoever wins without a doubt deserves a Title Shot. I'm slightly leaning towards Rory but not by much.

Counting his eggs before they've hatched- this reminds of Phil Davis campaining for Jon Jones before he had fought Rumble. Better stay focused on the Red King. Worry about what happens after later.

If he whips Rory, they have to give him a title shot. I just think Rory is going to be very tough test for him.

Hendricks is a tank but he's 5'9" with a 69" reach. Rory is just as tall as Wonderboy with the same reach, so keeping Rory at arm's reach is going to be a totally different challenge. And then you have to contend with Rory's takedowns. Should be a great fight.

It's a tough fight for Stephen......a true test for him.....kryptonite, but if he gets past this, he dominates moving forward.

Only if Dana and LoFer think you're money, otherwise they'll just give the shot to Ronda.

As much as I like watching Thompson fight, I hope Rory wins and gets a HUGE contract.

I don't think he beats Rory but if he does he earns a title shot imo unless they give a title shot away to Conor or something ridiculous

Unless Dos Anjos is going to challenge Lawler, Thompson should of already got the shot.

Woodley gets a shot for making weight against Hendricks and Thompson doesn't for destroying him? Bogus.

He should be fighting Robbie instead of Rory. I don't get why the UFC always tries to upend themselves with title shots... Jesus Christ!

This is someone who actually deserves a title shot and could realistically win one if he was given that chance.

I used to not like Rory cuz he beat the shit out of Nate and BJ. And also cuz he was so weird. But over the years, seeing him fight and hearing him on Rogan podcast, rory grew on me and now I'm a huge fan, especially after the lawler fight. Thompson has crazy momentum but I think Rory can be the one to stop that train. Rory is the ww momentum stopper. He did it to Maia and woodley. Unfortunately he couldn't stop Robbie's momentum. Errr... War Rory!!
