I'll be honest, I dont like his songs that much. but as a guitar player he is pretty special. no denying SRV changed the game for many.
Dude played with strings that were thick as shit. 13s. That's why he had such incredible tone. Most of his songs are tuned down 1/2 a step, but it's still incredible that he was able to play the way he did with strings as thick as that. Guy had some seriously strong fingers/hands.

That's awesome, I never knew about the 13s. I imagine they were almost a necessity for a guy with hands like that who attacked the strings so hard night in, night out to get through gigs without busting strings in the middle of songs.

Here are some prog & jazz fusion guys you may not know about.

This is Jef Lee Johnson. The playing is a bit 'out', but if you like jazz or Zappa or that kind of shit. you'll appreciate this.

Skipped the vocals on this one, cause he wasn't always the greatest singer, but you can check it out if you're so inclined:

Awesome instrumental version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" that starts slow & goes insane:

This is Mike Keneally, Frank Zappa's last 'Stunt Guitarist' in the mid/late 80's after Steve Via. No vocals here, cause once again, his singing is inconsistent:

This is a good song by Keneally, with some decent vocals & with Zappa-esque elements in some of the runs, but on acoustic:

This is a unique tune that's mostly instrumental called "Lightening Roy". It gets a bit weird & goofy when the vocals come in. Zappa guys will appreciate it, & I love this kind of thing.

Speaking of Zappa alumni, this is Adrian Belew, who was Zappa's 1st stunt guitarist. He also played with Bowie & The Talking Heads, among others, & was King Crimson's frontman in the 80's till the mid-2K's. This is an instrumental with his power trio called 'E'.

This is his power trio doing a Belew/Crimson tune called Dinosaur:

King Crimson doing Elephant Talk in 82:

That's enough for now. Enjoy!

Some great names in this thread. Bonamassa has to be the best guitarist I've watched live. If I'm feeling a bit metally I head to phinehas or mandroid echostar for some sweet prog stuff.

Side note as douchey as his tunes are actual tunes are John Mayer is an incredible guitarist. Not only is his blues trio fantastic he's shared the stage with several of blues' greats and more then held his own.

I like Bonamassa. Dude can rip it.

And I took my wife to a John Mayer show up in Chicago a few years back. I'd never really heard the guy play because I don't listen to pop music - but I was floored by his talent level. That guy can absolutely shred on guitar. I don't like a lot of his songs because they're just not my style, but now if I hear one I'll listen to it and try to pay attention to what he's doing on the guitar. He's really, really good.
