Roy Nelson says UFC 'owes him' a title shot

While Stipe Miocic's knockout win over Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 shocked many, it also inspired others. At least that was the case for UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson.

Nelson, who's 1-3 in his last four trips to the Octagon, believes that any heavyweight can get a hold of UFC gold with just one punch. And that's why he wasn't surprised with the way the UFC 198 main event materialized. Instead, he was inspired to become the next UFC heavyweight champion.

"All I know is that Stipe gave me inspiration because if Stipe can be that UFC champion, and they actually gave him a title shot, then I'm like, ‘Ah, I do have a chance,'" Nelson said on last week's edition of The MMA Hour.

Not looking past Derrick Lewis, Nelson believes that with a win over "The Black Beast," a title fight with Miocic makes sense for him and says the UFC owes him a rematch with Miocic.

"Stipe has the belt, then Stipe," Neslon said. "I just think the UFC owes it to me to give me a full camp to beat him up. But I'm not worried about that right now. All I care about is Derrick."

I dont get roy nelson...he's obviously talented. He's got knock out power and a solid ground game...but his conditioning makes me think he puts minimal effort into training.

I honestly think his shtick of being the fat guy has held him back from a lot in his career. It helped a little but Dana has talked poorly about him for years due to his size.

I remember when he was on TUF 10 and Trevor Whitman got into with him about his training being not what it should be. I would've loved to see him at 205, if he kept most of his power and his chin he would've been great especially considering how good his BJJ is. He has the personality to go far but when the big man in the big show doesn't like you it will be a huge detriment to a career.

I vaguely remember that.. I think roy said.. what he was doing has worked for him so far, so he wasn't going to follow the coach's directions. Maybe thats his issue...he doesn't take coaching well?
Couldnt help but warn his opponents to watch out for the belly choke when he was fighting on TUF.

Yeah I think he said he was training in his garage by himself. That's pretty remarkable how far he made it considering.

He may have still had his chin and power at 205, but he would probably be way too slow and would get worked by the top of the heap at 205. His conditioning seems ok to me compared to the rest of the heavyweights. Roy is great, but I don't think he's a champ in either division, I think he can be ranked higher at HW than LHW, especially with the HW division being full of older guys on the back side of their careers.

I disagree with what people are saying about all that excess lard he's carrying.
I think that's his brand, it makes him way more marketable, and it is probably the main reason he hasn't been cut yet from the UFC yet.

idk about that one. lewis hits hard but the only one to crack nelson's chin is a guy with lunchboxes for fists in hunto. we'll see tho im happy with either one winning
