If that happened he's just supposed to report it to USADA immediately. If it was on the up and up, why wait until a pre-fight medical to disclose?
From his own words he mistakingly thought that only using ivs for the purpose of weight cutting was against the rules.

Not sure I'm buying it..........actually, not buying it. IV use banned from October-15.

Not just for weight cutting rehydration as that wasn't the intent.

Usada wanted it out all together due to the fact that it was helping drug users hide their drug use......

They don't care about the weight cutting aspect, it's the drug use. Everyone was made aware.

Not saying he's using but this was clear regarding reasoning for banning the use.

if they are scared about fighters diluting samples, couldn't they simply say -- "we will allow you to use an IV, if you take a drug test beforehand"

Why am I not shocked by your response?

Forget the IV, I'm more concerned that BJ believes the earth is flat, according to Joe Rogan (from the most recent fight companion podcast).

Same here...bj said he checked the banned substance list to make sure whatever he was taking wasn't on it. But when I checked the banned list, The IV ban was the first thing that popped up. Its right above the dl link for the sibstance list. Impossible to miss. But...who knows if it was there when he accessed the site.

When in doubt, the person being accused of the violation is probably guilty as fuck. There's no witchhunt going on here, they're just doing their jobs. BJ Penn is not a name they targeted to make money off of, they'd be more inclined to go after bigger names if they were truly about making the money, 'cause BJ doesn't bring the dollars anymore, he's done.

he's bullshitting. He's long known the rules (old and new) on IV and has comment on them in the past.

That sounds reasonable. USADA gets another test result, and the fighter gets what he/she needs (assuming the IV is necessary or recommended by a doc). Maybe drug test before AND after? Or provide a sample of the fluid in the IV bag as well?

Did we ever get a doctors opinion on the necessity of having IV in BJ's situation?

Sorry, was drinking champagne and eating caviar between doing loads of coin-laundry.

Here's the quote:

“The first time I heard about these doctors was when I was busy training at the Jackson-Wink gym in New Mexico. The doctors came by Greg Jackson’s gym to help athletes with various issues including eye problems, concussion symptoms and brain trauma. Unfortunately I was busy training for my upcoming fight, so I didn’t get a chance to work with the doctors at that time.

After my fight got cancelled, a couple of fighters invited me to come down to Dallas with them to meet with these same doctors. I thought ‘why not’ as I have had prior concussions, I deal with vertigo and well you have seen how many times I have been hit during my career. I figured if there was any chance that this could help my vertigo, motion sickness or maybe even improve my vision, as I have a lens from a previous cataract, then this was a good thing.

We were doing some of the different exercises for vision, motion sickness and vertigo and then following my physical, one of the doctors suggested that I take a glutathione IV."

“They said that after doing a physical on me and taking a look at my symptoms, a glutathione IV would be great for me. They told me that having the glutathione administered through an IV would be the best way for my body to absorb the antioxidant.

So the first thing I told them was that I am signed up with USADA year-round, so we have to take a look at their ‘banned substances list’ and make sure there is nothing in there.

We went through the banned substance list and of course glutathione was not on the list.

Once we discovered that nothing in the IV was on the banned substance list, I let the doctor administer the IV.

I was so focused on USADA’s banned substance list that I never gave any thought to the IV except for the fact that sometimes people had used them after weigh-ins before a fight.”

Things that strike me right away:
  • Who are these docs specifically focusing on pro-athletes, being allowed to solicit at the gym, that don't know the rules?
  • I'm HIGHLY suspicious of whatever these guys are selling for concussions, as the international consensus right now is rest and then graduated return to activity. There is no proven medication or other intervention at this time, though the field is RAPIDLY changing.
  • Glutathione in oral and IV preparations has been studied for meniere's disease in weak sudies (that is not the same thing as just having vertigo) and indeed, a brief pubmed search only returns 4 results for "glutathione vertigo". One that is not relevant, and three that are small weak studies of Meniere's.
Beyond that, glutathione has a decade long "fountain of youth" following in the crackpot holistic world. It is claimed to treat everything from fibromyalgia to cancer to skin disorders. All with little to no evidence, and often disproven.

Glutathione does have actual medical uses. But without something more substantial, this sounds like more of the usual hocus pocus that seems to inundate the sports world with MMA being no exception.

BJ should try some stevia next time.

WTF is this shit? So if you fight in the UFC, you can NEVER take an IV? Even for medical purposes? lmao. USADA and the people who support it are beyond retarded. Stop paying these bums to fly around the world and harass the athletes.

"OH HEY, this substance improves athletic performance.... let's make sure athletes never use it!" lol, what a retarded culture. Because who wants to see great athletic performances, right?

"Hey athlete, go out and entertain me with an unbelievable athletic performance.... just don't take the things that will help you perform well."

Sick of this PED witch hunt shit. You morons are like the shitty manager who expects miracles out of his employees, expects them to run themselves into the ground to get the work done, but is too cheap to pay for the man hours. Stop being so stupid.

No. That is not accurate.
You need a medical exemption.
If you need an emergency IV, you then get it. Afterwards you contact USADA with details on why you needed an IV -- "I went to the Emergeny room bruh, here's my paperwork".

The USADA IV rules are very clear. BJ sounds about as convincing as Tom Brady.
Tom Brady is very convincing, and so is the science that has 100 percent exonerated him.

The only thing not convincing is the butthurt fans of teams that have been taken dry with no lube by the Patriots for the past 15 years when they say they just want justice.

that's what im saying. i mean best of both worlds, right? likely better fights because the fighters come in better hydrated & no (or less) risk of it being used to tamper with samples.
