Wanderlei Silva talks about fighter's health and how he has been experiencing memory loss problems lately.

The news of Kimbo Slice’s sudden passing are still shocking the MMA world. As Wanderlei Silva recently wrote on his Instagram, he was still digesting Kevin Randleman’s death when he heard the news, which had him worried about fighter’s health.

Furthermore, Silva also wrote he has been experiencing some memory loss problems and feels like commissions and promotions should help fighters out more.

This is from an article of mine so forgive the 'cut and paste' comment but here are my thoughts -

In his post Silva states that “We don’t know yet all the consequences caused by our profession, or the consequences on your bodies and minds…I attended a lecture about concussions and I had 12 out of the 15 symptoms presented by the expert there.

While it is true there is still much being learned about CTE, one thing that appears well established is that it is a disease of mileage. If you get hit in the head enough times there is a point of no return. When that point is going to arise is never known but when the point is crossed is clearer. Think of smoking and cancer; a doctor can’t tell their patient how many cigarettes they can smoke before developing cancer but they can tell when the disease has already manifested. CTE and brain trauma are similar. Its not known how many hits are going to be too many but early stages of CTE can be identified.

So should this admission be career ending? I am not in the business of handing out fight licences but State and Provincial athletic commissions, who are tasked with this responsibility, must take admissions such as this seriously.

Earlier this year I discussed what MMA’s CTE/Concussion lawsuit may look like. In short it would be anchored in arguments that athletic commissions failed in their duties to deny licences to fighters who are showing consequences from too much ‘mileage’. Admissions such as this fit squarely into this model.

Whether commissions are fearful of potential litigation or not, their central duty is to make decisions to protect the health and safety of combatants. Licencing combatants who are experiencing chronic symptoms of head injury fails this duty.

Silva goes on to ask “Who is going to look after us?“. His damage perhaps cannot be undone but commissions denying a further fight licence may be part of the help he is looking for.

But not what he wants at all, I'm sure.

Sad to read... I think I'll be done with watching mma once Fedor retires for good. I've felt guilty plenty of times that I am enjoying seeing people get beat up.

I could see Bellator not ever letting him fight now after all thats happened this year.

I wish him the best but i keep thinking an Ali type situation could be in his future, maybe not as severe but with the shots he's taken who knows.

Fighting is probably the saddest career a person can have. Take abuse your whole life in training, competing and feeling the effects once it's done. Forgetting your friends and family, losing confidence in your mental abilities, and experiencing immense depression are commonplace. All that for just the chance for glory and wealth. Very few ever get the benefits they seek, but even getting the benefits can't protect you from the consequences of that career choice.

I've always been a fan that was sort of self-hating. The reason these guys are subjected to this career is because people pay to see it. I'm part of the problem as a paying customer. But as someone who has trained in mixed martial arts for many years and has developed a love for it as a form of self-defense, physical fitness, and a game of incredible strategy and calculation, not watching MMA would deprive me of seeing those who do it best. I've always been torn as a fan of the sport. There is no sport I'd rather watch because I find most others meaningless. They don't challenge the mind, body and soul in the same way that MMA does. It's the purest form of sport there is. I just hate the fact that it's a business that destroys the athletes and their families 99% of the time. No sport has higher highs or lower lows.

I hope Wandy hangs em up, but we all know he's already fighting far beyond the point at which he should have retired. Even if he never takes another blow to the head, it's too late for him to have a decent quality of life.

I'm not surprised a guy like Silva would have CTE.

Given his brawling style(never became a fan because of it) and the fact he's been in almost 50 fights and KO'd in several of his losses... dude should retire.

I watched that movie concussion yesterday, man that shit really made me think.

One: Fighters should be getting paid more, because it's not just their bodies that are being put on the line, but their minds as well, it's one thing to be a cripple of the body, but I'd rather that than have a crippled mind.

Two: Fighters need to learn when it's time to hang 'em up and move on too something new.

Three: Sparring is a big factor they say in Boxers careers when it comes too concussions. Hard sparring like Chute Boxe is known for really should be a thing of the past. If you throw hard shots, throw 'em too the body, but save your chin man, that's a finite resource. Broken bones, cuts and bruises heal, but the brain can only take so much.

100% correct on the sparring component. Its not just concussions its the accumulation of sub concussive blows. A brain can only be exposed to so much mileage.

Fighters need to know when to hang em up but more importantly regulators need to know it. Its their job to decide who should get a licence. When there are symptoms of chronic brain trauma regulators need to shut the door on the fighters career.

He has been in many wars. But I wonder how much the car crash he was just in played into that. Remember he's only just recovered or recovering.....

I would suspect that Wandy has as much CTE as any MMA or Boxer in history. He has been around since the beginning and has to have had well into the hundreds of brutal fights when you consider the way he used to train. He is one of my all time favorite guys to watch, but he is probably going to be an unhealthy old man.

He really should be careful of what he says in interviews if he really hopes to get licensed for more fights.

I feel about Wand how I feel about Saku- I would hope he would walk away and have a happy and healthy rest of his life. He's earned that. But he probably won't :(

Could you explain why you would like to see him continue being licenced when you also hold the view that he will have CTE as profoundly as anyone in combat sports history? How do you reconcile these views?
I just meant that if HE wants to fight, he should be mindful of what he says. As much as I enjoyed watching him in Pride I would be more than happy to see him retire and not take anymore trauma. That being said, it is his life and if he is going to fight anyway I will always watch. Maybe I'm a hypocrite or a tool, but they know what they sign up for and if they are ok with it, I am ok with it.

Sorry, I misread your post and asked that question based on my misunderstanding. I tried to delete the q but you're faster than me. Cheers!
