Raw meat. A whole chicken. Skin a rabbit and let him eat... head, guts and all. They are wolf cousins. Here's my boy.

Changes in dog food will give mine the shits.

A lot of the rest is down to the personality of the dog, mine as a neutered male spends most of his time impersonating a rug, even though he's in great shape, did 15.5 miles in 2 hours yesterday evening easy. you'll have to see what you get, mine spent 5 years on his own in a back garden so he's not bothered coming to me for attention at all but loves when I go over and pet him, he likes fetch more than my Staffie too, they are all individuals. They heal quick from soft tissue injuries as well.

ya, he is 1.5 years old. still has a lot of puppy in him. he knows some basic commands but will need more training for sure. he loves to play fetch and tug of war.

we have 3 cats so that should be a fun time lolol.

cant wait to take him hiking and climbing etc.

Sweet I got my staff at that age it's perfect for training, don't try to hard for the first few weeks though they have to respect you before they'll work for you. I always make the sit and wait when I give them food then tell them to go when the bowl is on the floor, that's a good start from week one.

awesome. any other first week tips I should know? do you crate yours when you go to work etc? we will need to crate ours for 4 - 5 hours a day while we are out. dont know yet how if he is crate trained yet or not but regardless.

YES! I collected mine from his old house twice in the first month I had him, he would disappear like a ghost if I let him out for a piss alone. He knows what's up now that he's better off here, I let him freewheel anywhere quiet now no problem.Just leash him for 8 weeks or so, and start small.

Nope I'm around all the time, he will shit on the floor if left for hours, which he doesn't do overnight, so it could be separation anxiety. No one really crates dogs here so i don't know.

Edit- Week one, things like making them walk beside you on the leash not letting them lead you about. Always walk through doors ahead of them, sit and wait for food and crossing the street.

My dog is a GSD and I got him at 8 weeks. We did several months of schutzhund training.

Like @Sweets , I made him wait to eat, he hat to watch me (not the food) until I gave him the ok to eat. We had to work up to it.

I crated him when I was at work for about 2 months until he was old enough not to chew on the couch and wires. My wife would come home to give him a bathroom break.

After that, he was old enough to let hang out at home alone. I have a doggie door, so he can go to the bathroom whenever he wants.

As far as a leash, I live in a very populated neighborhood, so we had to work our way to off leash privileges. I would teach him the boundaries of th he yard by recalling him if he went too far. When I sat on television front porch, I'd have him leashed for about a year untill he stopped reacting to people walking by, kids on bikes, people walking dogs... etc. Now he doesn't need to be on leash, as long as he doesn't see a cat or squirrel.

Just take your time with him. Don't lose your patience and always have him around you and people. Before long, you'll be reading each other's minds.

Oh ye cats, don't worry they'll kick his ass double quick introduce them slowly though let him see them on the leash make him sit and be calm, maybe don't leave them alone together for a while, after that it's the dogs safety you have to think about, mine are both friends with the cat.

ya, we will be taking it slowly for sure. the cats have their own bedroom in the house. so we are planing on putting like a baby gate there so they can run through it if need be to their room lol.

we are both gone for the morning and back at noon. most days I am home for the afternoon or out and about so I can take the dog with me no worries. its those 4 - 5 hours in the morning that are the pain in the ass.

but as you said. consistency and patience.

Nah should be good they'll be friends in no time that first meeting is important just keep everything calm until the novelty has worn off.
