Fedor Emelianenko to the UFC? Finally? It could happen in 2016, said the man himself.

Emelianenko told Ariel Helwani on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour that he is closer than ever to signing a contract with the world's leading MMA promotion. And his next fight, after this weekend's bout under the Eurasia Fight Nights banner, could very well be in the Octagon.

"Yes," Emelianenko said through a translator. "In a word, yes. That possibility does exist."

Emelianenko will meet UFC veteran Fabio Maldonado at EFN 50 on Friday in St. Petersburg, Russia. The bout will air on UFC Fight Pass. After that, the MMA legend said he will be a free agent and ready to speak with any and all organizations. Emelianenko said he does have an offer on the table from the UFC.

"I always wanted to fight for UFC and I would fight for UFC, but at this moment we're looking at the deal and the deal has to satisfy both parties -- them and my organization," Emelianenko said. "Until there's no friction, until we are 100 percent in terms of seeing eye-to-eye, we are all basically in limbo."

Fedor says there are just some details to work out. I would imagine that has to do with his 1 more RIZIN fight but I don't know.
I know better than to get my hopes up but here I am again hoping to see Fedor hoist UFC gold.

There's a reason why the UFC brought him up several times during 199 - not just to promo Fight Nights, but they actually added Fedor to their list of records. Strangely, years ago, they would omit his name from the most victories/record type lists under Zuffa owned orgs, that they'd shown on the broadcast, even when he ranked higher than people on the lists. The fact he is mentioned at all in a positive way, and not just when someone who beat him is fighting, gives me hope

Plus I highly doubt Rogan would say "Maybe we'll see him in the Octagon if he keeps competing" on air unless he was given the OK. Zuffa and co would flip over that being said without permission

If he does sign, I hope it's just to fight Werdum or Bigfoot. This is the perfect time to get those back.

Really? Seems like this one has fedor vs lesnar at MSG written all over it, if both fedor and lesnar dont get brutally finished in their upcoming fights

Just like when gina carano toys with the idea of fighting again at the same time she has a movie coming out, fedor seems to always be close to signing with the ufc when he has a fight coming up.

Great way to get headlines, and interest in his next fight.

I will only believe fedor will fight in the ufc when buffer is in the cage announcing him, and not a moment sooner.

A few thoughts:

- Fedor said in the interview that there are some fine points that need to be ironed out. I think this has to do with the restricted free-agency nature of ufc contracts and perhaps also the reebok deal. These are not issues to be taken lightly, I think there's still way before we can say that Fedor is close to signing with the ufc.

- Having said that I don't remember him ever being so positive about the prospect of him fighting in the ufc.

- Although there are a lot of great match-ups for him in the ufc, one reason for admiring Fedor was how he never bent over for the ufc. So I have mixed feelings about him signing with the ufc.

- I also think the ufc is far from a level playing field for all athletes (recent case in point Lesnar's exemption from usada testing) and I'm affraid Zuffa will try to screw him over.

Nah. I actually think Brock is one and done. No way he is around long enough to be USADA tested when this "window" expires.

I know the deal is one and done but if Brock beats Hunt, I highly doubt that Brock and the UFC will come this close to the Fedor fight and not make it happen. They tried it once in 2009 and again in 2012. 2016 might be their last chance and I think they will deliver this time. As for USADA, only time will tell if that makes Brock go back to WWE. No point in people speculating about USADA now

This isn't a fight that interests me at all. Fedor vs lesnar or jds or mir or any other hw would of been better.

So you won't believe it when he's walking to the cage? Seems a little extreme.

;) Haha

I think there is no chance that Brock doesn't get tested, for multiple reasons.

Firstly, Mark Hunt would have grounds to sue their pants off. You can't just exempt people from testing. Brock got exempted from the 4-month testing period prior to the event because the event is way less than 4 months away. USADA tests are public, and I think it is safe to say that we will see Lesnar's name pop up in the next month or so. They don't have a UFC agenda (ask BJ Penn, Lyoto Machida and Chad Mendes). As soon as Brock declares his eligibility to fight, USADA can test him whenever they want.

Also, and you may not believe this, but since the deaths of Eddie Guerrero and (even worse) Chris Benoit, the WWE has really tightened up their drug testing regiments. This leads me to believe that Brock has been tested for at least his recent WWE stint.

The other is that the commissions would not allow a fight to happen with no drug testing, especially the crazy ass clown-infested Nevada commission. This isn't Texas. Brock was exempted from the 4-month preliminary testing period but I really doubt it goes much further than that.

I could be totally wrong because I understand that the UFC is not always on the straight and narrow, but this is how I feel about the situation.
