good luck with that. we release brutal murderers and rapists with ease.

I hate how soft our country is on people who harm others.
Canada and a number of States in the USA are "soft" in Jail term for violent offenders. In Canada the biggest problem now is the convicted under the age of 21 and Plea deals that are given when the Crown is weak on evidence. These are generally the cases we hear about in the press since they cause public outrage.

I'd bet in this case the Crown will Plea Bargain with the passenger for a very light sentence if he testifies against the driver. The testimony of the passenger, the video, other evidence and the public outrage for justice (of a very well liked and respected Jimmo) should be enough for the Crown to seek for the Maximum 25 yrs without parole for 2nd degree murder, and get it. Unfortunately the passenger in the truck will not end up getting much time.

Still I don't think that's enough for anyone who commits violent, needless murders. Death penalty should be used when there is ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT on who the KILLER is. Eye for an Eye!

NOTE: For those against the death penalty in case of someone being wrongfully executed I say this....When there is even the slightest possibility that a person is innocent take the death penalty off the table. Don't use it in circumstantial convictions or convictions only based on eye witness accounts.

I used to think the death penalty was the way to go. Then I met someone who had 2 brothers murdered in cold blood (at separate times, completely unrelated) I asked him what he thought of the death penalty "How does 2 more dead people help me or my family?"

Im not sure how Canadian law works but I have a question.

Why is the 2nd guy (the passenger) only being charged with accessory to murder after the fact?

In the U.S, if youre an accomplice in a felony and somebody dies than you are usually charged with murder as well even if you didnt pull the trigger (or in this case werent in physical control of the vehicle).

It's the terminology in Canadian Law, he is still an accessory to the crime and can be charged the same. Sentencing can be the same as the murderer although the term is usually handed out in accordance to how much the person participated in the crime.

Man that whole thing is fucked up.

Im all for executing them. All murderers. The prison system houses them for too many years. Just fucking wipe them out unceremoniously and i think it will be a better deterrent and make people think before the commit stupid acts with drastic consequences.

Life should = death imo. Just get em done with. People need to fear breaking laws.

Although im conflicted on cases where someone who is innocent gets convicted.

I dunno.

RIP RYAN.

Hope those fuckers get what they deserve
Thats the thing, sadly. Sometimes the justice system is wrong.

Ryan is fine now, he's gone, it's the people who knew him and loved him who are getting put through the ringer right now. Imagine if that was your friend getting run over. How would you feel right now about the world and life in general? Terrible place to be, and these losers are responsible for all of it. I do believe in the death penalty, but it has to be done right and therein lies the rub.

True enough and I don't think it really helps the victims family's overall. Then the other side is the career criminal and violent offender that knows how much time they'll get and wear it like a badge of honour. The other, a Violent offender will do it again no matter what. In those cases it prevents future needless deaths and perhaps stops others from playing a game with the system. If you know it's your life over and perhaps not just 10 to 15 yrs in jail maybe you'll think twice.

Holmolka story is incredibly fucked up. Other guy legitimately was a mentally ill man having a psychotic episode, so it's not as clear cut. Not that I agree with the leniency considering the horrific crime.

Do you have stats to back up those repeat violent offender claims?

I put out a few lines into Edmonton with people I know from there. A girl I'm friends with is 100% sure she knows the mother of one of the fuckheads. I guess the family has issues with drugs, not surprising. It doesn't sound like these are rich kid pieces of shit as I first suspected, it sounds like these are just pieces of shit.

What would wealth have to do with any of this? How would their financial status, or family's financial status make this crime any more or less than it is?

I used to live in Edmonton near the rich part of the city called Riverbend. For years there were kids between the ages of 15-25 getting away with everything from rape to attempted murder almost monthly. They were all from that part of the city, all from families that were very well off. There was a large group of them that would drive around with metal baseball bats and attack people at the local gas stations and nothing was done to any of them. Usually the most dangerous parts of a city to most people are the slums or downtown, not in Edmonton. It's Riverbend.

I wouldn't dare go anywhere near there at night, especially on weekends.

Anytime in Edmonton where there is a crime committed people always say "probably one of those Riverbend kids". That was why I assumed considering the stupidity and complete disregard for human life that it's probably one of those Riverbend kids.

I completely agree. but at the same time this "mentally ill" fucktard took someones life and ruined many lives of people on that bus who watched him do that shit... so regardless, he should be either locked up for life or his taken from him.

I think they should be forced organ donors.
You take a life, we take your kidney for a transplant on a waiting list.... then the other kidney..... then your eyes..... then your liver.... by this time you're on life support - which is cheaper by the way than housing an inmate for life. Then lungs for a lung transfer ....Then finally... heart for heart transplant patient.

Then your carcass is fed to polar bears who need food in the arctic due to global warming.

According to the American Bureau of Justice in their latest study of over 400 000 prisoners, the percentage of Vilolent Reoffenders is 71%. Try and find the Dunedin Report (has more studies about physical and mental health based off of it all over the world than any other), According the study Violent and criminal offenders with certain markers will have a very high likelyhood of doing the same crimes again. Scary thing is these markers (certain aspects in the brain) seem to the the norm and not the exception.

Whilst you arent wrong, it's such a fine line.

Serial murderers. Yes
Child killers. Yes
Pedos. Yes, in a brutal manner.
Mass murderers. Yes.

Otherwise you have to take it case by case. You almost need a seperate system, multi judge panel with a voting system. Makes it less corruptable and more level headed. The amount of remorse a man can have after committing an anger crime can be massive. I would hate for my son to be killed because he made the worst mistake possible, go to prison for sure no doubt. But to be killed for a mistake (not saying an accident, I'm saying an act he regretted) would suck. However if he was any of the above I would make peace with it.

Such a tough subject, hence why most of the west is on the side of caution. Which costs bazillions.
