Okay, so technical question---what Mark Hunt is doing up there looks like a 90-degree pivot. Is he doing a check-hook?
He's hooking chieck. That's why I posted it. I presume the exact opposite is what we need

It's a very similar movement. I will say yes. Look at the angle he is standing on the bud light logo when he throws the punch. His body is facing to the side of the logo after it connects.

I can't see his feet in the gif so I don't wanna s ay for sure. But watch the gif a few times and look at the way his head/stomach are facing when hes backing up, and where it's facing in the second after he lands. Pretty great angle.

Also, the way Kongo fell forward after being hit changes the way it appears, too. I think that makes it look less like a check hook because he landed a little to the left while Mark was moving to Kongo's right. But I will say yeah, you can call that a check hook. If Kong did not fall, more than likely Hunt would be completely sideways to him, very close to 90 degrees.. Like i said, hard to judge without seeing his footwork, but I am leaning to yes.

Hunt is a master at utilizing angles. Even if that's not a check hook by name in the purest form, it's pretty damn close. Hunt does some really sneaky ,tricky high level shit. Like when he fought Nelson, and others of course, he ducks down to avoid hooks, uppercuts and more. That's something you see a lot in HW boxing from a guy of his build, but you don't see much in MMA. Hunt's defensive wrestling improved to the point he can duck down hard/slip punches very low at odd angles and not worry that he will be immediately swept off his feet. He is a joy to watch.

What I see there is a 90 degree angle at best. Is the 180-degree definition just something ideal, then?

In the PBF/Hatton pic it does look like Floyd is close to 180. I can see the matador analogy there for sure.

And that's got to be hard as hell to pull off. Hard enough to dance off to the side making the other guy look like a flailing buffoon, but to land a punch while doing that? Fuckin' artistry.

It's really fucking hard and requires not just a precise movement of all the limbs in a different way, but a knick-of-time judgement of distance, how far your opponent is and how quickly they are going to reach you by the time you throw at them and move away.

Backing away like Luke did in the Costa fight and landing anything with significant power is VERY hard. Maybe harder than a check hook in terms of how you get your power off. the movement/pivot to the side of the check hook enables you to really throw your weight into it. When moving straight backwards, it's much much harder to get a good amount of power in the punch. What Luke did was beautiful

Here Gonzaga lands a monster hook while moving straight backwards. Thing of beauty. I feel like this is closer to what Luke did. Gonzaga is a bad motherfucker for someone who didn't start training n stand up at all until his mid 20s.

That's why I'd say Hunt's is very close. Not every single time will be a complete 180 degree turn, especially when a guy falls over like Kongo

But, he still threw with the intent of going off to the side while his opponent was charging him, and did get there right after landing, even if it was not 100%. Is there another angle of that gif? That's a great fight, probably will rewatch it tonight.

Also. Sorry for this whole thing guys. Not the best day today on my end at home. Just sitting at home now, cruising the forums, bored, and want to apologize for being irritable.

Yup. Wow I forgot how brutal that KO was. That's a check hook. Look at how fucking hard he hit Smith. Jesus. Daley's striking is a thrill to watch. Shame what happened to him and the UFC. So many great matchups we missed out on.

What;s he doing right now? Bellator? i forget

What about Seth-Kimbo? Seth was going perfectly backwards and landed with absolute perfection.

Then of course there is Anderson-Griffin for one of the more famous backward-moving KO's.

Yea a bit ofma and kickboxing iirc. He did launch a little campaign to get back in the ufc and I got all excited but ultimately it fell on deaf ears. He's still young though and seems to be in his prime

It's not a 180 degree turn, but I think how hard he threw the shot delayed his movement a bit. Doesn't matter, that is beautiful. I don' think anyone at 170 even now can take that punch if he hit them square on the jaw.

I miss Strikefoce!

Have two guys ever tried to check hook each other and ended up mirror-imaging? Like double matadors.

Spiderman had to know Kung-fu. Inverted palm blast, lent itself very well to web slinging.
