Luis Santos entered the ONE Championship cage on Friday to battleBen Askren for the welterweight title, but the bout ended in a no-contest.

Santos impressed early in the fight, taking Askren down twice and almost getting the mount at one point, but ended up poked in the eye at 2:19 of the first round. The Brazilian was given five minutes to recover, but couldn’t continue.

"He scratched my cornea," Santos told MMAFighting.com. "I won’t be able to train for three weeks."

According to Santos’ wife Carina Damm, Askren was unprofessional after poking "Sapo" in the right eye.

"The doctors were talking to ‘Sapo’ in the cage and Askren was all over it, trying to push him back to the fight," Damm told MMAFighting.com. "He wanted ‘Sapo’ to return injured so he would have an advantage over him. That was his only chance, in my opinion. Ben Askren is unprofessional and everybody saw that.

"‘Sapo’ is in the hospital right now. He hurt his eye pretty bad, scratched his cornea, and they are doing some exams now," she continued. "He will need to use an eye patch, and will take some time to recover from this. I don’t know if they are doing to book the rematch or even punishing Askren for this unprofessional move. We will see what happens next."

Scratched mine before. Not only was it extremely painful I couldn't see shit and worried I was blind. Had to wear the pirate patch for a few days while it healed up. It sucked

Yea mine happened as a kid and not from a poke. I remember I got rushed to hospital and they shot this orange dye in my eyeball and then scanned it to see where it was scratched. It was a different set of circumstances but given at that time in my life I'd already broken my arm and been ran over by a van, I'd still say this hurt more. Luckily it's not gonna give him any long term damage. And you are right about the rematch, gonna be tuning in for sure

I am not happy with Ben's performance. Single legs are ugly in general and he is a relentless wrestler so its not the missed takedowns I'm thinking about. He just wasn't setting things up for that first 2 minutes. This is a common mistake that we all call out in any number of fighters, and while I think Ben's athleticism and strengths mean he has a long career ahead of him, I also have real questions about what his camp had him prepping for in this fight.
The eye poke was preventable but obviously not on purpose. It should already be a warning in the next fight with an immediate point deduction if the fingers are hanging out that far again. That's all the punishment and concern that is needed. Just a lower bar before point deductions in the next fight. Rematch asasp.

they even don't deduct a point with bones, and he threw hunderds of them, too much faith in those refs...

JJ is a great example of why you just lower the bar.
The current ref plans are - eye poke, give warning, eye poke, take point.
If a fighter is creating the behavior in each fight, just start the fight with the warning that their style puts them at a risk of fast point deduction.

I don't think its Askrens history that he is setup for eye poking, but its so contentious and was definitely him hanging fingers out there trying to paw the hand down for a takedown. So just lower the bar at the next fight to make everyone happy.

I think she was more talking about him getting in the way of the doc doing his job, and hounding Sapo to fight while Sapo was hurt that was unprofessional.

As a welder I understand the importance of eyesight. However, I've had metal scraped from my eyes on 3 occasions and it does not take 3 weeks to recover. It took 3-4 days with antibiotic drops. So man up and get back to doing what your best at. Train and rematch

And yes, I had it scraped from my cornea before anyone asks. I RESPECT the fact they called the fight, it should have been stopped because holy shit does it hurt and your eyes never stop watering. Can't fight like that. However saying he can't train for weeks is what I disagree with. Makes him sound like a puss. Sorry guys no disrespect intended.

You can't call a guy a puss and then say you intend no disrespect. That's exactly what you intended. And you say this from your home having no direct contact with Santos and no medical expertise.

Some cornea scratches aren't very serious. Others are. You aren't the doctor who examined him.

This.

Also, that sounds like par for course when a wife is concerned for her husband. The claws do come out.

Eyes are serious business. Blindness is not worth anything in the cage, not the championships, the fame, the $, fuck all that. I'd rather see my children than touch a belt in eternal darkness, so i get erring on the side of caution.

ECC170 @ECC170 pepper spray isn't as bad as i thought it would be. Had to get sprayed for training once. It sucks, don't get me wrong...but i guess i built it up in my head to be worse than it was.
