There's so much hype around Punk making his debut, but after 2 years or so of training, what will he actually bring to the Mickey Gall fight? His Jiu Jitsu cant be more than a purple belt (if even that). Some basic boxing, basic wrestling?

im almost rooting for cm punk at this point. If he wins i dont wanna hear anyone say gall isnt legit. Because for a regional dude he seems pretty good and hes probably outmatching punk is speed youth power bjj and striking.

But i still think punk gets tagged and then subbed

As for punks weapons ill go with N/A

Me too :) There will be fans that absolutely lose their shit if he were to somehow win this fight. I want to witness the aftermath.
Oh, i will be bumping the meltdown thread should that occur.

Are there any precedents for what Brooks is doing? I don't recall a single person without any martial arts or wrestling background leaping into MMA after 18 months. Actually, would have been 12 without the injuries. I'm not aware of a single trainer who would plan that kind of trajectory for a newbie. Even the guys you see in the grass roots shows ammy divisions usually have some kind of TMA background.

Some people are blessed with natural KO power, but I seriously doubt Phil has that. So I think his only weapon is going to be the fact that he won't have the habits of a seasoned pro fighter. This is mainly a detriment but sometimes it can work to the advantage of the newb. For example, Brock was like this early on when he was able to tag Couture and Herring with weird, unpredictable punches. He had no rhythm at that time and was in effect a highly unorthodox fighter. Of course, his TD threat always helped out, but his standup on its own was pretty effective, at least until people started to figure it out. Now, Phil might be a bit like this, but I don't think he has any natural power. But if he can stun Mickey with a punch from left-field, it's not impossible that he can follow up with a TD to RNC or something.

I would still be very surprised if that happened. People don't seem to realize what a mentally composed person Mickey is. I don't see him going apeshit and allowing a counter, or on the opposite end, being so passive as to allow a random punch to find range. I don't take Mickey's talk about finishing Brooks in one round that seriously, as it would be a mistake to give Brooks no respect, and I think Gall is serious about this fight.

What would shock me is Phil looking smooth and controlled, avoiding major damage from strikes and sprawling off TD's, then gradually finding some weakness to take advantage of, increasing the pressure on that weak point, then crashing home with a strike to some other area, followed by a blitz-to-TKO ending. If some shit like THAT happened, I would faint and wake up a Phil Brooks fan for life. I can't imagine any hate for him that wouldn't be stopped cold in its tracks at that moment. Because that will have been---at least AFAIK---unprecedented in the sport.

I'll give him props if he just manages to survive though. If he doesn't get submitted or KTFO, and the fight looks legit, you have to give him serious props. That would be a huge accomplishment, even if Gall is just a prospect-level fighter who's only fought tomato cans so far. Because he did crush them, and that's what you'd expect from someone with talent. How much talent Gall has, we don't really know. But he's not a rookie, and he's not some barnyard bozo.

It's going to be a sloppy fight and neither one is going to look like they belong in the UFC.

Mickey Gall's head is all screwed up now that Dana said he can't go out to "Oh Mickey, you're so fine"......I see him caving under chick magnet's pressure and looking for an out.....
