With the colder climates coming in my area and having to work outdoors this year, I'm in the market for some new thermal gear.

I'm required to wear fire resistant coveralls so I'm looking for something thin but keeps you warm.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The base layer/wool long underwear sporting good stores carry for hunting/skiing are great, and thin. Smartwool is my particular favorite.

I also wear FRs and it gets into the -40sC sometimes up here. Thermal wear isn't something to skimp on IMO. I prefer the dry-wear type over the old school waffle pattern stuff so I'd recommend some Helly Hansen or something similar. If you get a good set it should last you years and its great for snowboarding and shit as well. I'll do that base layer then my UA joggers and sweater (Stormtech) then my coveralls and I have a heavy FR winter jacket over it all I'm good all winter as long as I'm not standing still outside for too long. Go get sized up at Mark Work Wear or where ever you go then look for deals on Amazon.

I was leaning towards dry-wear. Ontario winters are fairly damp do I was thinking that would be a wiser option.

If you can think of another way you can use them like for skiing or something it'll feel better to drop a bit more cash on them. Even fall/winter camping, hunting, fishing, PJ parties....sure you can think of something. Any chance your employer has a PPE/tool fund you can dip into or help out with purchase? Maybe see if you and some coworkers all go in on a good amount if your procurement department has some connections for better pricing for groups?

Smart Wool is amazing and super warm without sweating. I didn't know it was trendy until after I bought it.

Under Armor 4.0...holy shit. Like you could probably be in sub zero standing in a wind almost indefinitely with a reasonable medium sized coat over it. No activity needed to keep very warm...good hunting or other sedentary option. But still within 10 bucks of the Smart Wool Cost.

I would say the fancy name brand stuff is worth the added cost if its going to be really cold or you aren't going to be active enough to keep warm under a cheaper option.
