Wasn't a serious kick but you can't put your hands (or feet) on a referee. There had to be some disciplinary action and a suspension of less than a year isn't unreasonable IMHO.

You have to provide a safe environment for referees, period. A fighter has to be aware that if he tries to use violence against a referee there will be hell to pay.

I'm fine with it. It wasn't much but you have to set a strong precedent that you can't put your hands on a referee.

Funny to think that Baroni only got suspended 4 months for punching Landless repeatedly (weak punches because he was on his back), and that's when they only had a UFC every 3-4 months so it didn't make much of a difference anyway.

Nelson will face a nine-month suspension and $24,000 fine for kicking ‘Big’ John McCarthy at UFC Fight Night 95.

Roy Nelson is not getting off the hook for his controversial post-fight antics at UFC Fight Night 95.

The MMA veteran lightly kicked referee John McCarthy after knocking out Anotnio ‘BigFoot’ Silva in the second round, claiming that McCarthy issued a late stoppage and let Silva take too much unnecessary damage.

‘Big Country’ did apologize for his behavior at the post-fight press conference but said that he ‘wouldn’t take it back’.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA (STJDMMA) suspended Nelson for nine months and issued a $24,000 fine, per MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz.

STJDMMA punished Nelson for assault and unethical…

I imagine they'll uphold it. Dumb decision by Roy to lose his temper like that.
Incredibly dumb. No contact like that with the ref is one rule I am ok with them being strict with.

I know it was a relatively minor attack, and I'm sure Big John was fine, but you just can't hit the ref. Period.

Tainted supplements no doubt.

McCarthy is one of my least favorite refs but you can't kick a ref after a fight.

I'm often in disagreement with the fines and punishments these commissions hand out, but I'm okay with this one. He kicked Big John like a bitch. Can't let stuff like that slide no matter the circumstances behind it.

And it's not like he's a young dude with years left to fight. He's 40 years old and on the downside of his career. Now he's lost 9 months of it, for something that should have been avoided. Dumb move on his part for sure.

Dumb thing for Roy to do, but 9 months seems a little harsh to me. To say he "kicked" a ref is a little misleading. He played touch butt with his foot. Of course you can't touch a ref in any way so I say fine him but let him fight again. No suspension needed.

In the interest of full disclosure, if this were a fighter i didn't like i would be calling for a much longer suspension and more hefty fine.
