Frankie Edgar calls for winner of Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor: Dana White 'owes me a title shot' - MMA Fighting

"I want that title, man," he told Jon Anikon Saturday. "I know Dana's not here -- again. I don't know if he's ducking me because he owes me a title shot."
Frankie getting right to the point here, awesome. Great quote from the former champ here and he's more than deserving for the next title shot IMO.

"I am," Edgar said when asked on FOX Sports 2 whether he believes he should be next. "I think I've been. I just beat one of the best guys that does our sport. I was able to beat him five rounds to nothing, close him out. I think I'm the next title contender."
Tough to argue against this.

"I went out there and really wanted to make a statement," Edgar said immediately afterward. "I won five to nothing, but Urijah is tough as hell, man. He was the guy that I looked up to when I first got in. He was the guy everyone wanted to be. It was an honor to fight him. He's a legend of our sport. Us light weight guys really owe it to this guy."
Love this shit. Frankie could have taken a jab or shit talked but being the guy he is he gave Faber credit for what he's done. I can't remember the last time I rooted against Edgar and its because he carries himself like a true professional every chance possible.

Though on a serious note, Edgar is nothing but class and deserves the shot! Dana can't ignore him now

He deserves it and I'd like to see him fight Conor.

A rematch with Aldo though...meh. It won't garner much interest IMO.

Frankie is Conor's worst nightmare. Not sure he can beat Aldo though. He definitely deserves the next crack at the title though...hell, he deserved it 3 months ago.

Yes, he's not the most exciting fighter, and no he's never going to be the carnival barker McGregor is, but he's earned his shot.

This is very true, if Conor wins Frankie would rip that title right away from him but then we have to remember that they will automatically rematch Aldo so he'd have to wait again.

No thanks. He's had plenty.
He's had three title shots in his UFC career, one of them he won the belt, one was a rematch from a questionable decision where he lost it.

He's only had one crack at the Featherweight title, and the only other legitimate contender at this point is Mendes who has fought for it twice and lost both. If you don't want Frankie to get a shot because you think he's had plenty already, who would you be putting in instead?

Personally, I'm more interested in Edgar/Aldo II or Edgar/McGregor, than any other title fights in that division once Aldo/McGregor is done. Whoever comes out of that, assuming nobody's beaten Mendes in the mean time, have him fight for the belt afterwards.

This is very true, if Conor wins Frankie would rip that title right away from him but then we have to remember that they will automatically rematch Aldo so he'd have to wait again.
I keep reading this a lot from people and I'm honestly not sure that's the case. It depends on how the fight plays out, but after all the hype and the pressure and how much this whole experience has taken out of Aldo mentally, were he to lose the title to Conor (or if he wins it too) I would not be surprised if he were to take an extended break before his next fight.

If Conor beats him, Aldo will get his rematch, but I'm just not convinced it will be an immediate one.

I don't how Aldo is as a person, but if you've been the champ for a long time, Conor wins a razor thin decision and then talks all of this "I told you, he's lucky I didn't knock him out in x round, but I knew I'd win because he has no heart, I am the greatest and unbeatable and told you so", could aldo ignore that? Because there is a good chance something near to that could be heard if Conor wins......just this mans opinion

Like I said, I think in part it does depend how the fight plays out. In the event that it is a razor thin decision, a bad decision, or worse, some sort of draw, then the UFC would look to make an immediate rematch and I'd imagine the fight would happen.

In almost all other circumstances though I genuinely wouldn't be amazed to see Aldo take some time away to regroup whether he wins or loses. This whole experience, all the promotion, having to deal with Conor, and then the fight itself, would take a huge toll on anyone mentally. When you throw in him actually losing the fight on top of that, I'd really be surprised if we see a quick turnaround for an immediate rematch.

Aldo has made it pretty clear that this has not been an enjoyable experience, and that he's spent about as much time dealing with Conor as he wants to. He doesn't like being around him and everything that he has had to do to promote the fight. I don't know that he'd be super keen to jump right back into that whole circus.

I'm not talking about years, but at least six to nine months away from the cage spent with his family, after what will no doubt be a bigger payday for him than he is used to once they start dishing out PPV buyrate related bonuses. Some time to reflect on the whole experience and get himself together to come back stronger and go after the belt again.

I see it talked about a lot as though it's a given. McGregor wins, immediate rematch. I just don't think it's as clear cut as that.

Fair points made here........interested to see how it plays out

I don't care how boring his style is, he has earned the title shot through his performances. I can't think of another sport where being exciting for the fans advances you closer to the championship. Is this professional wrestling or a damn sport? I realize professional wrestling has heavily influenced modern MMA, but at the end of the day these are athletes, this is a sport, and winning should be the only damn thing that matters.

That's how real sports work my man. You keep winning you keep getting shots at the gold. Imagine if they told the bills back in the day oh sorry you've had enough chances to win and u didn't u can't go to the Super Bowl lol.

I think you make a good point. Anderson and GSP have gone on record with saying how taxing it is being champ for a significant amount of time and how they were relieved, almost, when they no longer had the belt. It is a lot of pressure having to defend the belt, knowing everyone is out to get you, and when you add the extra stress that this fight's build up will have caused, then it won't be surprising to see Aldo want a break regardless of the outcome. Even if it is a rematch, I could definitely see it being within the time frame you mentioned.

Isn't the superbowl and this is sports entertainment. He doesn't deserve a shot, he's had plenty.

Frankie's best case scenario is for Connor to win. I don't see Connor beating Frankie at all.

So you'd rather it be more like the wwe, and play strictly to specific created story lines? No thanks.
