School me on "Spawn"

I was a kid when it came out, but the hype around it seemed unreal at the time (possibly because it was a new character, and the usual suspects were stale).

Was the character/comic a game-changer? If so, how?

How popular was it?

Are you a fan of the character/comic? If so, how highly do you rate it amongst the legends in that world?

Well when those artists at marvel left to go form Image, there was the promise of greater creator's rights. That seemed like something that was pretty positive from jump. I don't think it 100 percent worked out that way, but i remember the hype was there.

Jim Lee is one of my favorite artists from the 90's, and McFarlane's idea for spawn fit in perfectly to that era's "gritty anti-hero" popularity. I recall the book was outselling some other heavy hitters. Pretty sure it outsold Superman.

The premise of the character was very different from most other mainstream "heroes", so a fresh take on Spawn's origins was something that resonated with a lot of fans.

I personally liked the character, but some of the stories fell flat overall.

I was a big fan of the HBO series. if you haven't already, check it out. I didn't follow the comics much before or after, but that series was awesome. the live action movie was garbage (IMHO) in comparison. I might have enjoyed it if I hadn't seen the HBO series beforehand. HBO 1-3 are on youtube IIRC, but I recommend Blu-Ray/DVD.

The comic series does go off kilter after issue #100 but the first 100 were really pretty awesome. There were also some spinoffs using the Spawn mythology which were really entertaining, like Dark Ages Spawn.

I like Ghost rider a lot. He (comics version of course) is highly underrated in terms of his abilities. The guy has gone toe to toe with some of the heaviest hitters in the marvel landscape.
