Nah, I think people should be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want in the privacy of their own home. My left tendencies are economic rather than social, comrade.

Easy Tanto. It's just the Internet. Nobody asked you what you give a shit about. You posted in the thread. Iam on board with most of your points though.
The fact that I am 1/64th Apache leads me to being greatly offended by being called 'Tanto'. There is only one Tanto in my life, and I generally have it on my hip before I have a shirt on.

You're offended because he called you a kind of knife?

I mean I could see if he called you Tonto, but being called a samurais short sword is actually pretty bad ass.

Same. As get older Im definitely not as Right as once was, no matter how much I would like to deny it.
I think people are more idealistic (left or right) when they're younger and then life teaches them to be more realistic.

Similarly, the older people get the more they just want the powers that be to leave them the fuck alone.

Some people, as they get older, aren't in a position to think that way. They are alone. Broke. And wish the powers that be could help them with sicknesses or even keeping a roof over their head and allowing them a little extra to see his or her grand children once in awhile

BUr for people with a good nest egg, ive seen what u said to be the case for sure

Yeah, I think people want The Man to leave them alone in general. As people age, they tend to accumulate wealth and become less reliant on the state. Those people may become more economically Conservative. Or they may be more open to charity now that they aren't living paycheck to paycheck. That's what happened to me.

I just wonder how many elderly feel this way versus how many feel depressed, broke, and lost

I used to assume most were the former... I dnt think that's the case any more tho as I've started seeing cases of the later... it's upsetting to watch. And then the misery zaps the life from these people.. :-/

Yes, many people don't manage to make savings and rely on a state pension. They are more prone to illness/injury and more vulnerable in general and find it difficult to go out and meet people.

A couple things. I was referring to social policy, rather than economic. I didn't, nor have I ever, infer that people unable to provide for themselves should be left to their own devices. Having said that, if one of my parents were in that situation they'd be living with me or my brother. The responsibility of family members being taken care of should fall on the family before it does the state.

It's not fair for me to write such an upsetting comment about depressed elderly without an uplifting comment about something alongside it

Totally... I wasnt trying to directly discuss policy with this one (I actually edited it and added something, and almost ended up deleting it)

My point was to play devils advocate (not even refute) the assertion that people gravitate towards the center as they aget

I'm seeing alot of cases personally of people actally swinging left as they age. I think it comes down to financial status

I personally am only seeing the opposite. The loan exception is the 2 people who are the best off in their retirement. They have swung very, very far left.

I agree and thats the way it should be anyways. Unfortunately for some, that isnt the case. The Left and Right both have flaws. Like almost everythig else, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I just think, its almost like the system in America is flawed. We have two real parties and no middle ground. I dont know any registered Independent's other than myself.

I find myself very conflicted when it comes to Politics. Thats why I usually stay out of those threads. Certain ways I think are due to my upbringing and my time spent in the Military and personal life experience's. Then other subjects I contradict my own thoughts.

Like you, as I get older and weigh life's experiences I find my personal views becoming more Liberal. But I still don't Identify as one. Only on certain subjects. I have yet to find any political party or Candidate that I could really get behind and support. I also find it repulsive that people pleadge blind allegiance to any politcal party.
