On Monday, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor Jane Kim announced plans to offer free City College tuition to all of San Francisco's residents regardless of need. It would be the first metropolitan area to do so.

San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim told local station KGO-TV, "Making City College free is going to provide greater opportunities for more San Franciscans to enter into the middle class and more San Franciscans to stay in the middle class if they currently are."

Under the proposed deal, which is expected to take effect in the fall, the city of San Francisco would provide the City College of San Francisco with nearly $5.4 million annually

The two-year community college currently charges $46 per-credit. More than 28,000 students would benefit from the proposal, Kim says, and any resident who has lived in the city for at least a year would qualify.

The deal would also provide full-time low-income students who already receive fee waivers from the state $250 per semester. These funds could be used towards books, transportation and other costs.

To help City College develop and implement these changes, the city of San Francisco would additionally offer one-time funding of $500,000.

In November, residents approved a transfer tax on properties selling above $5 million to help pay for the deal.

Lee and Kim's announcement marks a major milestone in the campaign for free college. In January, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed a plan to give free public college tuition to students whose parents earn less than $125,000 per year. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both backed similar proposals.

But San Francisco's plan takes the concept one step further. Wealthy residents, "even the children of the founders of Facebook," would qualify for free two-year community college under this proposal, says Supervisor Jane Kim.

Tomorrow, City College of San Francisco's board of trustees is expected to finalize the plan.

Tennessee already gives free college to high school graduates (paid for by the lottery) and is now working on getting it for adults.

most people is so.cal get financial aid for city college they basically give you 4000 dollars in cash to pay for school and school supplies like a laptop, I went to a state school on scholarships but a city college would have been free if I filled out like 3 pieces of paper.

edit:
you also get all your classes free with fee waivers

They should invest that money to fund trade schools so our economy has skilled individuals ready to enter the work force instead of adding even more entitled whiners to the labor pool who think their Fine Arts degree is an "I get to coast through life" card.

California also has a ton of trade programs most people I know who do trades did them for free in high school and college. electricians and culinary students usually get them for free.

This would be a government assist program that I would be 100% behind because it benefits society. There's no shame in having a career that doesn't require continued education at the college level. I hate that stigma and I have no idea where it came from.

Free? Lol the cost of living is so high in SF they should be paying people to go school. It's one of the most expensive cities in the Country.

That's not going to benefit all of the families in San Fran that name their children Bryce, Tanner, and Apple.

I think a lot of it is just ignorance. There are a ton of people working mid level bank jobs and things of that nature that are somehow ignorant to the fact that there are welders and plumbers making more money than they are and still viewing them as inferior because they didn't overpay for a piece of paper and get dirty at work.

My parents went to Brooklyn College for free back when the City University of New York was free. Why does the author say it would be the first?

I knew conservatards would be shitting on what seems like a good idea
I'm not shitting on it, I just think it's a bad idea. Despite claims to the contrary, a college education doesn't guarantee a pathway to success. Unless I'm reading it wrong, this is a 2 year college. I'd much rather have these tax dollars spent on career-specific education that the students would actually benefit from. As it is, I just see it as a way to put off life for two more years after high school. Because "Why not? It's free."

Not everything that "feels righteous" is necessarily good for the intended beneficiaries. That's a concept that libtards (hey, turnabout is fair play) fail to grasp.

San Francisco City College is a 4 year school.

"Life," as you call it is varied.

This. The benefits to the people most in need of education to participate in the economy of the Bay Area are negligible.
