Side note: When I worked at the Sheriff's dept we regularly had US Marshalls coming through. They housed their prisoners at our jail for stop overs and/or to drop off as we housed quite a few short term. They were mostly true bad asses. Highest ranking in law enforcement so no one messed with them. However, every one of them would tell you that they wouldn't even speed in Texas. They said Texas don't give a damn who you are. You don't fuck with them.

Threatening it all the time is a right of Texas National Heritage.
But it won't happen.
We are American by birth and Texan by the Grace of God.
I've never been to Texas and I love it.
The perfect trip for a first time Canadian would be the end of October for about 1-2 weeks. Don't come in the Summer, you'll melt.
Spring would be okay, but still can get a little funky.
Fly into DFW and go to Fort Worth for the most Texan big city. Dallas sucks...sort of, I'm required to say that as a Houstonian.
Head to Austin to watch Formula 1 and hang out with hipsters at the live music capital of the world.
Then on to San Antonio for proper Tex-Mex experience.
Houston could be on the list for days of the best fattening restaurants you've ever had. But really, with a first trip, you'd want to go West. Houston would add too much time. Its best to add for a trip to New Orleans.
San Antonio out to Fredericksburg and the wine country. There be Germans and beer...
And Lost Maples park will be changing colors near then:
Then keep going into the desert all the way to Big Bend.
It gets pretty empty out there
Since you'd be here in November with this itinerary you could overlap the Terlingua Chili fest where 10,000s descend on to an awesome ghost town for a chili cook off
Out West you'll do the McDonald Observatory...
Hit up Hipster Mecca in Marfa
And stop in Alpine
But you won't really hit your destination until Big Bend....
It'll be too cold for swimming, but it'll be amazing for hiking without dying during the day...

Probably 100F (43C) but the Heat index is around 110F with no shade anywhere.
It actually gets hotter here in Houston, but we have shade and A/C
It can be brutal in the desert midday.
Alpine is super remote but has a winter Texan and artist community. Those transient home owners run the prices up.
Could be 100k or huge place at 500k.

I've swam in December in Arizona while the citizens there walked by in parkas and winter hats looking at me and my brother like we were crazy.
I was in South Carolina in February once. Man, you get some weird looks wearing shorts in February.
I've been wearing shorts for two weeks, it's been mostly above zero and up to about +9. After a few months of -30 zero is balmy.
@Splinty speaks the truth. My favorite city in tx is San Antonio. The food... o my god the food. I've only been to Houston twice, once for UFC 69 and the humidity at the weigh ins made 70 feel like 90. Dallas gets shit on but it has its charm. If you're into liberal shit it's pretty much a Mecca. Gay or straight, the gay Halloween street party on oak lawn is not to be missed. my best friend is a queer and we went about 4 years in a row. One year we introduced our uptight conservative friends to it and they reluctantly went. They had the time of their life.. gays always hang around the hottest women and the drinks/drugs are in no short supply...For bikers the hill country has some of the best winding roads. There's really something for everyone in tx
