I don't think it's fair to say that the average person understands the extent to which Google data mines. Kind of like how when people buy a fitbit they don't realize that the info it gathers is sold off. Fitbits are actually really, really messed up. That's another thread though.
And in that situation it is on them as a consumer.

For all ISP's to be doing this does not provide the consumer with an option to opt out is bullshit.

If you dont want Google selling your personal data then switch to duckduckgo. If you dont want your ISP provider to sell your personal data and information? Too fucking bad, soon your only option is to not use the internet.

I really don't understand how you reconcile the idea that it's okay for Amazon or Google to do it, but not okay for someone else. If on Google or Amazon's front page told you "By using this site we're going to track you everywhere you go and then sell all your info" people would think twice. In some cases you only have another option by the strictest definition. Have you ever used Bing? Bing couldn't find a fuck in a whore house. Even then I'm not really sure I'd believe there are any search engines that don't data mine their users.

Anything you get for free, has a cost. I thought people knew these basics of our capitalist economy.

Do you think Google provides a service out of the good of its heart? People choose to use Google for free in exchange for Google to collect their data. If people had to pay for a subscription to Google who then didnt tell you they were collecting your info that would be a different story.

An ISP is already earning a fee off providing you internet service, fuck them getting an extra fee off selling your personal info. And you dont have an option to seek out another provider who wont do the same.

If you dont like Google collecting your data, you have a choice to to use their service. You do not have the same choice when it comes to ISP providers.

Computers come setup with Google as their default search engine, so even that's somewhat debatable. Having said that, I have less choice when it comes to search engines than I do ISP providers.

Why should it be illegal for AT&T to offer me a lower cost in exchange for my data?

You beat google using a piece of software with do not track enabled.
You beat your ISP using a VPN.

I think there are some interesting analogues.

Can a business succeed in the current climate without facebook? Does facebook have a social media monopoly on business pages?

That almost goes without saying.

I agree. And with it I think any claims that you can simply avoid certain web pages is disingenuous.
Facebook, Google, and the ISPs ought to have a once over by the FTC for antitrust reasons.

But not the FCC.

Thats bullshit.

You have access to dozens of search engines.

I would be surprised if you has access to a dozen ISP providers.

I have 5 well advertised ISP's, 8 I can think of off the top of my head.

For search engines I can think of Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask Geeves, Lycos, and Alta Vista? Are they still around? I don't doubt there are more but I'd have to Google them.

That being said when my 60 year old parents buy a new computer and Google is the default search engine as far as they're aware, it's all that exists.

DuckDuckGo doesnt track or sell your shit.

If you like Google search results, one option is Startpage - Google results without your info being tracked or sold

Dozens of options out there.

You really have access to 8 service providers? In Canada? We only have 3 big companies, I bet the others your mention piggy back off one of the big 3 ISP providers.

Unless something's changed I'm pretty sure only have 2 have infrastructure, but an ISP using their infrastructure still offers different contracts.

This is the equivalent of fatty's who blame fast food joints for making them fat.
Until McDonald's starts serving their food to people in their own kitchens, that's a horrible analogy.

Google pays for that product placement because they know the average consumer won't bother to look for another search engine option when a really good one is literally placed in front of them. At no point do they tell their users that they're whoring them out.

The analogy has to do with the "helpless" consumer who just doesn't know any better. Sorry but ignorance just doesn't float.

Its not a hidden secret. I am not so sure why you think people dont know about this.

If you are offended by a free service selling peoples data, you shouldnt be sticking up for a paid service who sells your data.

You can look up your own Google advertising profile, check it out if you haven't done so before. Ads Settings

Go buy a new computer. Turn it on, open the web browser and tell me what pops up. There'll be a search engine, but no info about that search engines ulterior motives. I honestly don't understand how you say "buyer beware" as applies to search engines, but think it's unfair for ISP's to put things in contracts that need to be agreed upon by the same consumers.

I am not sure how much more clear about it I can be..

You have a choice when it comes to what search engine you want to use.

You dont have a choice when it comes to deciding if you should choose an ISP who sells your personal data or you choose an ISP who doesnt sell your personal data.

You have access to numerous internet search engines.

You can choose to use one (internet search engines) which does not track your data and sell it.

Just because a computer comes preloaded with Google as the default search engine, you dont have to use that as your default search engine. If a consumer doesnt know any better and just accepts Google as the only option, that is not Googles fault.
