Robert Whittaker will wait for UFC Middleweight title shot - ‘Cards (and youth) stacked in my favor’

Robert Whittaker firmly cemented his spot as one of the elite fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight division when he knocked out Ronaldo Souza at UFC on FOX 24 a few weeks ago in Kansas City, Missouri (see it again here).

Soon thereafter, “The Reaper” called for his shot at the division strap — seven straight wins is nothing to scoff at. The only problem is, the 185-pound title picture is currently jammed up, as Georges St-Pierre will get next dibs against division champion Michael Bisping. When and where, however, is yet to be determined.

After that, Yoel Romero -- the division’s true No. 1 contender -- will get the next championship fight, which means Whittaker will have a lot of waiting around to do. And he’s just fine with that.

Winning a UFC title is becoming less and less interesting every day to me. I would rather just watch great fights... I am bored of fighters sitting out for a title shot. Pay everyone what they're worth and nobody is gonna sit out for a title, it just wouldnt be worth it.

It's statements like this that make me just put my head in my hands and go.... well you are right, but fuck....

He's going to be waiting 9 months or more and then you have injuries and other interference.

He definitely deserves the next shot......especially as the "champ" creatively steered around him......

But waiting is not good.

He could be waiting a while, and the longer he doesn't fight just increases the risk of him slipping down the ranks and people lose interest in him.
Bisping is only defending against GSP at the end of the year, and you can see the UFC easily giving title shots to Yoel (they fukn better!), Connor,Rockhold and even maybe even Mousasi first. That could be 4 of waiting if he's unlucky and by that stage they are going to want to give the shot to active fighters.
