Cerrone, who is one of the most active fighters on the UFC roster and typically fights once every other month, is set to take on former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler on July 8.

'Cowboy' wanted to fight earlier, but claims UFC head promoter Dana White ordered him to take a 'timeout' after his brutal stoppage loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC on FOX 23.

"I would have fought sooner, but [UFC president Dana White] put me in timeout for a while," Cerrone told Brett Okamoto on ESPN's Five Rounds podcast.

"After the [Masvidal loss], he said, 'You're in timeout.' I asked if I could call him for a fight and he said, 'No.' I said, 'Come on. ' He said, 'No.'"

This was justified in my opinion. Cowboy would fight the week after KOs if he was able.

Dana is right on this one. Donald fighting often is great but when he gets his brain rattled a bit and then jumped right back in there and gets beaten silly the last thing he needs is to jump in a month later and do it all over again. His brain needs some time to heal regardless of what his spirit needs.

It's funny. I've heard people question his willingness to fight through adversity, but the motherfucker will fight anyone they put in front of him and would fight every weekend if they'd let him.

I used to dislike Cerrone but he earned me over as a fan. With that said, I think a break was a good idea. Hard for a bad mutherfucker to stop being a bad mutherfucker, even if it is just long enough to heal.

masvidal turned street and iced him in a hurry

could have been much worse if Donald got up a few more times

He does need to be careful who he fights and how he fights...Jorge eats him up 9/10 and that is time to switch something up IMO

Cerrone didn't look right before the Masvidal fight even started. He looked sick. I knew as soon as I saw him in the cage that he was going to lose.

Not taking the win away from Masvidal or anything like that, just saying that Cerrone shouldn't have been fighting that night IMO he already needed a break.

Don't we all say this every time Cowboy loses?

He just isn't as consistent a fighter as some others.

Completely support this. If we want to have Cowboy Cerrone around in the UFC for a while longer, someone needed to slow him down. His "fight constantly" strategy is awesome and it's part of why I'm a fan, but it can only be sustained for so long.
