Jake Shields Scores Big In Conor McGregor Rivalry

It's only a couple of minutes.

Points:
1. He and Danis don't like each other, but he knew Danis was a tough grappler. He wishes he'd gotten a submission but is happy with the win.

2. He knew Danis had a great guillotine but it was even better than he expected.

3. He talks about SBG rivalry. He doesn't hate them, but there is bad blood. He says he respects them (I assume he means as competitors).

4. He says he would like to continue submission grappling for several years, and at least a couple more going against the very best (imo he is making a really great distinction here, and it seems to reflect a great matter-of-fact mindset about aging)

5. Regarding mma, he wants one more fight to see where he's at, and then he'll evaluate.

6. For grappling, he just wants to face the best guys. For SUG, he still wants to grapple Jon Jones - that is his dream match.

I put this in Cageside just so people don't miss it if they're interested, but feel free to move it to Grappling.

didn't he spend like 10 minutes with dillon on his back and then win in sudden death overtime by having 8 seconds longer back control? fair enough those the rules.. i guess..

When you score MMA fights in live threads you quote the rules all the time to justify points while handing out drunk ratings to anyone one who argues. Seems odd you're doing the " I guess" thing here.

Those points are accrued across the whole contest. This takes a small portion of the match and makes that more valuable than the body of work. Regardless, I wasn't arguing that Jake didn't win by the rules, just that those rules didn't reflect who was the better grappler due to the specific nature of those rules, as mentioned earlier. Does that answer your question?

Honestly, I agree with the point that the SUG rules are odd in the way they handle OT. I'd much rather see the Metamoris approach of subs only within a time limit. If nobody subs their opponent, it's a draw. The reasoning is that the SUG OT format doesn't reflect the better grappler. It simply reflects who is better in a specific position.

For example, Faber was trying to hold onto back mount for dear life, but Paulo was able to get across Faber's chest and get his inside shoulder to the mat to turn into guard. Faber wasn't thinking to attack from back mount or to ditch back mount and go for full mount or some other superior position where he could have attacked which would have been the right thing to do if not for the rule set. He was only thinking to maintain back mount since the rules would reward him for that.

That being said, these were the rules when they agreed to compete against each other. So fair is fair. Jake won. End of story.

"Jake survived a 10 min onslaught of my submissions "

Well, that's a backhanded way to take your loss like a man.
That statement is useless as soon as it is uttered. Taking it like "a man" would also include not saying you're taking it like "a man" in my eyes.

Nobody says they won "like a man" now do they.

Are people really complaining about the results here? The event utilized the EBI OT rules that a lot of no gi sub only tournaments are using. If there's no subs in regulation, competitors start either in back control or spider web and see who can either get the sub first, or escape first.... Jake had better defense and escapes, which IS part of your grappling skill set. You can have all the sub skills you want, but if you can't defend or escape, you'll lose waaaaay more than win.

Dominating position in a sub only tournament doesn't mean shit to me, if it was an IBJJF tournament Dillon would have won... But here the point is finish.... In OT, it's defend and escape faster..... Jake won

Fyi both Jake and Dillon are on the Polaris 5 card with some other big names:

Polaris 5 features Tonon vs. Danis, Shields vs. Strauss

Crossover stars.
Yeah Tonon is going to fuck up Dillon AGAIN.... Dillon is trying to have a rivalry with DDS, but doesn't understand that you have to at least win a few to keep it interesting.... He's their whipping boy, at this point I'd favor Nicky Ryan over him
