In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Lyoto Machida revealed that he feels an illegal elbow from Rockhold was the beginning of the end for him during their UFC On FOX 18 bout in Newark, New Jersey.

“I’ve watched it maybe 3-4 times, that fight,” said Machida of the Rockhold bout. “I saw that I got an elbow on my neck, he elbowed my neck and I was so dizzy that time. Then, when I went to corner, I barely hear my brother, so when I got back to the fight, I was so dizzy, my legs were wobbly. I wasn’t recovered. So suddenly I fell again, and he was smart and capitalized.”

Machida continued, “I thought that was illegal shot. But, it’s not a problem because it’s a fight, something happens sometime. I think it wasn’t on purpose, but I think it happened, it made me bad.”

doesnt the intent make it illegal? if he threw the elbow with intent to hit the face and machida moved and took it in the neck is that not accidental? if he targeted the throat on purpose 100% illegal

For sure the elbow made him dizzy and he never recovered from it, but it was the right hook to the back of his head that dropped him in the first place. He was moving badly on the ground after that.

I think he's just telling the truth.

He isn't bitching and complaining. From what I quoted I think his attitude is - It sucks, but fuck it.

Still a big fan.

As am I, but when is the last time Brazillian and with a lot of others, you heard "He was the better man" and stuck with it? I realize from Lyotos sort of naive position he doesn't see it as excuse making but the water is muddied these days.

Cain seems to be *THIS TIME* , but we'll see. I attribute class to his response to questions, but after JDS 1 it has then been a month after or his trainers, like other fighters, coming out with the excuses once the dust settles.

As I remember, Lyoto was very humble immediately after the fight in defeat and I was pleasantly surprised to see a Brazilian own up to a loss. Now he he comes out with this delayed excuse. Disappointed.

Why is it every Brazilan has an excuse as to why they lost? Cain goes and gets his ass beat and what does he say? He won no issues with it he was the better fighter. I wonder do they have 30 min each day in training camp for excuse practice.

Lyoto's never been a good scrambler and that hook didn't land at all, it went behind him and then Lyoto got dragged to the ground. From there he was beat up and lost position scrambles everytime he tried to get up. The elbow absolutely ended this fight for him, but it was a legal shot to the side of the head.

Until I just saw Zeph gif, I couldn't remember the elbow in question.

What I do remember from that fight is luke rockhold beat the shot out of lyoto machida. I remember being blown away by it.

The same thing will happen when he faces wideboy

Never been a good scrambler based on what? He got out from Jones with no problem. The hook did land from what I could tell, even Jack Slack mentioned that it landed. That's why he looked so bad on the ground this time when he usually doesn't, he was rocked. You can tell as soon as he goes down he turns and looks really weird doing it. Like it's in slow motion. The elbow itself lands on the side of the head but if you watch his forearm it's on his neck.

Lyoto lunges in and over extends himself completely, putting himself off balance with his centre of gravity past Rockhold's lead leg. The hook misses and comes round behind the head, and turns into a forearm club/pull, that brings an already off balance Machida further off balance. To finish it, Machida's left leg gets entangled with Rochold's lead right and turns it into a trip. Machida instantly looks for a double, but gets sprawled on.

To say that hook rocked Machida is a stretch, we've seen Machida shrug off much worse shots, so either his chin is shot and that rocked him so badly that Rockhold managed to out scramble him, or Rockhold is an awesome scrambler, while it has never been Machida's strong point, and every time he tried to get up Rockhold was in position to punish him further. Which culminated in the eblow to the head, which absolutely did rock Machida, and left him wobbly for the next round. I wouldn't take Machida's word on how he felt before that elbow, he likely doesn't remember much of the first round.

I've seen the fight. "To say the hook rocked Machida is a stretch, we've seen seen Machida shrug off much worse shots" You don't shrug off a shot to the back of the neck, that has nothing to do with your chin. You still didn't explain why you think Machida is bad at scrambling up, while I gave an example of him being good at it (against Jones).
