Irish lightweight Joe Duffy has signed a seven-fight deal with UFC after testing free agency following his last trip to the Octagon against Reza Madadi in March.

Graham Boylan of Intensiti Fighter Management, Duffy’s manager, confirmed the deal with MMAFighting.com earlier Thursday.

The Donegal man has gone 4-1 under the UFC banner since his debut in March 2015. His only loss came by way of unanimous decision when he met Dustin Poirier at

I am actually disappointed that he didn't end up in Bellator. That could have been so much more fun.

Joe Duffy signs contract that prevents him from getting more money should his stock improve over the next 3 years, but not from getting fired.

I'm just glad that the UFC got one right. They may have went retard but they haven't went full retard yet.

Strange how things work out. I thought it would be the other way with him and Mousasi.

Well my pick for next to jump ship just dropped

Good for duffy
Probably not good for Duffy, other than that he's employed for at least one fight, after which his being bound to his contract -- if he loses -- could be completely up to the discretion of the UFC (if they are still writing the type of contracts as in the past, and with the cutthroat lawyers of WME the contracts might even be more employee-hostile).

lorofthepies is likely 100% correct, above.

All that "6 figure contract" boosheet years ago was just that. Those (at least some of, maybe all of the) contracts for TUF winners were written with escalating purses (smallest in front) where the contract was void as far as the fighter's rights if the TUF winner lost, and could be enforced after a loss at the UFC's discretion (i.e. fighter had no freedom, win or lose, to leave the contract for its duration). 10 years ago I think the opening purses were like $12K/$12K at the front end, something like that, so if you won the show & lost your first fight, your "6 figure contract" could be void at $12K or whatever.

If a loss frees Duffy, too, then good for him on getting that in the contract. Otherwise, it just puts a ceiling on his earning potential in a period when salaries & contract terms are being more intensely contested than at any time in the past.

If the contracts are void at the UFC's discretion, like in the past, the length of the contract is a mirage (since the fighter isn't protected from the UFC dropping him or voiding the contract & renegotiating if he loses, which you would think would be the main point, for the fighter, of having an extended contract).

Love this guy, I'm glad they held onto him. I'm still holding out hope for the big rematch down the road. In my opinion he's got some of the nicest boxing in the sport. He'd look more at home against Mayweather than Conor is going to look, which would still be a long way from what would be required to look good.

The UFC may have sweetened the pot after the Mousasi thing when they realized people will actually jump ship for financially better offers. I mean, I'm sure they'll forget by the end of the month, but that has to be stinging right now, so maybe they decided to go into defensive signing mode here.

There was a time when the UFC was able to leverage their brand name as part of contract negotiations, because fighting in the UFC meant a fighter would get extra sponsors, but they deliberately threw that away with the Reebok disaster.
