It is a different sport with knees/kicks to a grounded opponent.... Great stuff.

And just to make this topical: I really believe that DC wouldn't have taken as much damage as he did last night if Knees/Kicks/Stomps to a grounded opponent were allowed. Jones would have kicked him once when he was moving around on the ground and the ref would have stepped in as I have seen happen a million times with these rules in place. Instead, Jones got down on the ground and hit DC over and over and over again on the side of his head until the ref stopped it.

Those short but heavy machine gun elbows were brutal

Agreed.

Soccer kicks are less important and I can understand visually why it may not be great for Western audiences, but grounded knees fundamentally change the sport - for the better. No spamming lazy TD attempts from a mile away without consequences.

I've never been a fan of stomps and soccer kicks to the head but I love grounded knees.
Stomps are just brutal. And can make the sport look unappealing to the uneducated. Stupid people assume you can knee on the ground already so adding them is fine.

Having said that mma is legal almost everywhere except France now so I doubt you're gonna have an issue adding them in.

I would say that soccer kicks are even more important. The scramble becomes a safe place without them.

They certainly change things too.

Regardless, I think convincing North American commissions to allow stomps and soccer kicks is a bridge too far.

I think we will see them budge on the knees eventually in time, because the grounded fighter issue continues to be a problem (not that it's completely solved without kicks, but is improved) and while knees are brutal too, there is something less visceral about them.

Yea I agree. Your fighting style also has to change to adopt that risk so naturally people will learn to not leave themselves as open for them.

People have been talking about convinicing commissions to add knees on the ground for a decade and nothing has happened and nothing will. I found that out LONG AGO talking to the heads of the commissions and banging against a corrupt, lame, uninformed wall......

I gave u a rainbow for the literal meaning of it: Optimistic

I doubt VERY SERIOUSLY that grounded knees will be added anytime in the near or even distant future...

Not a bad observation. I agree that the g&p Jones was hailing down could have been avoided with 1 swift kick

I don't think you can assure that "DC wouldn't have taken as much damage as he did if Knees/Kicks/Stomps to a grounded opponent were allowed" but you certainly can say that overall, if Knees/Kicks/Stomps to a grounded opponent were allowed, mma wouldn't be any more dangerous than it already is.

the single most dangerous thing in mma is extreme weight cutting. a few guys have died doing it in the last years. no one has died from a particular strike.

banning soccer kicks was simply due to the feedback from combat sports pre-mma and the visual effect on the general public. it's part of a hypocrisy where fighters are meant to be as brutal and ruthless as posible and their main goal is to kick their heads off and leave their opponent out cold on the mat, but at the same time we have to look out for their safety.
