Fight Facts is a working title for my new UFC statistics project. I formerly wrote for Vice Sports, doing a similar series of pieces called Cage Captions. As of now, I am writing these new series of pieces for fun and informative purposes, and not for commercial use. All pictures have been obtained from Getty Images or USA Today Sports images, and attribution to the photographer and a link to the picture will follow each piece.

The name may have changed, and some of the stylistic features from Cage Captions will also be different, but it's the same great information presented in a slightly different format. Fightland forever!

More than ever, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. I'm developing this with the fans in mind first and foremost, and I'm always looking for ways to improve it. I have several different design ideas, so hopefully you guys can weigh-in on which ones you find more appealing.

To not hammer the first post with a ton of images right out of the gate, I'll post the stats themselves on this first post, and then the slides on subsequent posts as I put them together.

Fight Facts: UFC Fight Night Mexico City
8/6/17

Total number of UFC Fights: 4296
Total number of UFC Events: 408

Not Paid by the Hour
UFC Fight Night Mexico City featured a whopping 7 first round finishes, tying the record for the most first round stoppages in modern UFC history with 5 other events (UFC 146, TUF 1 Finale, UFC Fight Nights 14, 32, and 68).

Brothers in Arms
Despite joining the UFC two and a half years later than his older brother Anthony, Sergio Pettis has amassed the same number of wins as his brother (7).

ALL seven of Sergio’s UFC wins have come by decision.

Fish Out of Water
Canadian strawweight Randa Markos lost a split decision to Alexa Grasso, dropping her record to 1-5 when fighting outside of Canada. When fighting in Canada, Markos is undefeated at 6-0.

Paid the Price
Niko Price remained undefeated with his first round TKO over Alan Jouban. 9 of his 10 wins have come by stoppage, with 8 of those coming in the first round.

Sugar Crash

Rashad Evans has lost his last FOUR bouts, and has gone 2-6 in his last 8. Rashad’s last win came on the same night Sergio Pettis made his UFC debut in November 2013.

Rock-em Souk-ham
Despite knocking down his opponent three times in the fight, Andre Soukhamthath lost a contentious split decision to Alejandro Perez. Soukhamthath became just the SIXTH fighter in UFC history to debut with two split decision losses (Jesse Ronson, Uriah Hall, Julie Kedzie, Elizabeth Phillips, and Eric Shelton).

Dusted Him
Dustin Ortiz smashed the record for the fastest finish in UFC flyweight history with his 15 second KO of fellow Tachi Palace Fights alum Hector Sandoval. The previous record stood at 44 seconds from Fredy Serrano’s injury TKO victory over Yao Zhikui.

Lost Not Forgotten
Submission magician Rani Yahya submitted Henry Briones with a kimura, becoming just the second fighter in 2017 to submit someone with the move, and only the FIFTH fighter since 2015 to win by kimura. 75% of Yahya’s wins have come by submission (18 of 24), in 11 different ways.

Von Flue for You
Jordan Rinaldi pulled off just the FOURTH Von Flue choke in UFC history by tapping out Alvaro Herrera, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to use the submission whose name does not rhyme with Von Flue (Jason Von Flue, Ovince Saint Preux).

Watch That Weight
Since implementing the early weigh-in procedures at UFC 199, 29 fighters have missed weight, with 8 of those occurring in women’s divisions (27.6%). Women’s bouts have accounted for 70 of the 593 fights since UFC 199 (11.8%).

It sucks that Vice pulled the rug out from under you but I'm happy you're still doing this. I hope another news outlet picks you up. Thanks for continuing to post the stats here.

amazed at Yahya's win being only the fifth time in 2 years that someone's won by kimura...I'm sure they used to be a lot more common back in the day no?

Well there have only been 31 Kimuras in UFC history, and that includes the Phil Davis "Mr. Wonderful", the triangle kimura from Chris Lytle, the inverted triangle kimura by Rockhold, and Nog's mangled arm. But, in 2014 alone, there were 5. None in 2012 actually.

It's ok, sometimes these things happen in MMA. I'm grateful to Fightland and my editor and fellow writers for everything we did that whole time. I'm proud of all of our work. Until someone does show interest, I'll keep writing these up here first as long as they'll have me. As for now, I do these for the fun.

Mind if I share this on social media @jeicex?
Sure, that would be wonderful, thank you.

You guys can follow me on twitter at @jaypettry, I try to watch the fights and post stats as they come up. I also like to chime in about walkout music, and sometimes the things I find out turn into these kinds of slides.

Good thread. Always cool to get some facts about fights and fighters I'm not aware of.

Just heard this one:
If rashad does end up retiring, or leaving the UFC, he will have lost his last two fights by split decision while his first two fights in the UFC are split decision wins.

His career in the UFC is a split decision sandwich.

I absolutely love these fight facts!!

I'm also totally surprised by the lack of kimura's. I'm very novice level jiu jitsu player but I tend to get kimura's a lot. I actually go for them more than any other submission, but guillotine is what I'm best at. Anyways, very odd that kimura's are not being done.

Lol @ Rashad's entire fight career being a split decision sandwich. Funny.....b/c it's true.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. The visual aspect has taken a lot more time and energy than I anticipated, because I am reinventing the wheel for these so I don't run into any potential conflicts from my previous project.

Jeicex knows!

He also has an EPIC archive of all the walkout songs. Ask him anything about them & he has an answer! :D

While I was rewatching the card this evening (it's something I like to do, to go back and watch them through a few days later knowing what to look for), I picked up one more stat to add to the lineup.

Hot and Cold
Randa Markos has alternated wins and losses throughout her entire UFC career, and in her last TEN bouts she had won one and lost the next, and so forth.

I'm just saying...! & they should count since they were in a title tournament...!! :p
The only fights that should have counted were the fights on TUF Live, but they still wanted them to be exhibitions. This is all that matters, homie, edited for clarity.

I didn't mean like you should have counted them but like, the UFC should, etc... Since i'm pretty sure they count the Rose loss on her record which is stupid because it's in TUF. If you count that one then count her wins too which did matter since they got her that fight.

What type of questions do people have about walk out songs?

Are there any walk out songs that have some interesting info that most fans don't know about?

What is the most underrated walk out in your opinion?

Most of the questions I get are "who did he/she walk out to" or "what song or artist has been used the most" but every now and then they ask the second question I'll answer for you.

Are there any walk out songs that have some interesting info that most fans don't know about?
There are quite a few, so I'll throw out a few examples to see if you or others have heard of them:

The band Hatebreed was banned from being used by UFC fighters for years, because of a false belief that Hatebreed was a white supremacist group. Chris Camozzi and Matt Brown are among a few of the fighters who had their Hatebreed songs vetoed. Matt Brown said 'screw that' and got Jasta (the frontman of Hatebreed) to write him a song, it's called "I am the Immortal" and he's used it ever since.

Carla Esparza had her choice of "Harvester of Sorrow" by Metallica blocked from use, and it seems like due to some licensing issues, fighters can no longer walk out to Metallica songs. I reached out to the UFC to ask the specifics and was stonewalled as one would expect.

At the beginning, the UFC hired a bunch of nu-metal bands to use their music for generic walkout songs, among those are the bands Adema, Dope, American Head Charge, Black Flood Diesel, and the legendary band Stemm who created the iconic "Face the Pain."

Also, the UFC hired musician/composer Frank Klepacki to do music for the early days, including the old TUF seasons and a lot of the old PPVs. Klepacki is most known for his music for the Command and Conquer video game series (Hell March, anyone?).

This one is a bit more well known - Rory MacDonald had his walkout music chosen by a stranger for a few years. Rory changed his number without notifying the UFC, so they contacted that old number asking for his choice of song, and the guy had a good sense of humor and chose some unusual songs like "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer and tried to pick a Nickelback song before he was shut down.

I have tons more too.

What is the most underrated walk out in your opinion?
The ones underrated to me are usually the ones that are out of place. You know, songs that don't make sense why they'd be used before a fight. Dave Kaplan used General Public's "Tenderness" as a walkout song, which caught everyone off guard. Tom Lawlor loves to use songs like Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" to mess with his opponents. I like those a lot better than a regular AC/DC or Johnny Cash song. Don't get me wrong, I love AC/DC and Johnny Cash, but they're so overdone they're not special.

Anytime a fighter uses a song from Bloodsport or Kickboxer, I get hyped up, like "Fight to Survive" or "Street of Siam".

It's fairly overused, but I also get a kick out of fighters using "Can't Be Touched" which is the rap song made by Roy Jones Jr. Whittaker likes that one ever since going to MW and it's served him extremely well.
