The Aldo-McGregor fight is back on for UFC 189 next week and everyone seems to be happy. But the Nevada Athletic Commission can still ruin the party by not clearing the Brazilian to fight. Jose Aldo suffered what was first believed to be a fractured rib during sparring on Tuesday. Yesterday it was announced that the rib is bruised and Aldo will go on with the fight.

If the champion won't be allowed to go on with it, though, the UFC already has a backup plan set up. Number-one ranked Chad Mendes will serve as a so called stand-by opponent, who stays in shape until fight night, to jump in on a day's notice, if needed.

As Yahoo Sports reports, he will be paid for that role, regardless of wether he ends up fighting McGregor or not. According to the article, this is a usual procedure for the UFC.

For the record, White said Thursday that Mendes will be paid, regardless of whether he fights. White said the UFC does that frequently, and said it paidJessica Eye to train and be ready as a backup to fight Ronda Rousey at UFC 184 in February if Cat Zingano wasn't able to make it.

Another interesting point in the article is, that Mendes agreed to be the stand-by guy without even knowing that he would be paid for it.

"Honestly, I don't know," he said. "I guess we're still talking. I don't really know. But they offered me the chance to be the stand-by fighter for UFC and, paid or not, I was all over it. I was 100 percent going to do it."

Mendes and McGregor had a few heated and public debates over the last years, even without a fight scheduled against each other.

"This guy has talked and talked and talked and for the last year, he's made it personal," Mendes said of McGregor. "I'm going to thoroughly enjoy punching him in the face. Getting in there and getting a belt against a guy like him, who in my opinion has a lot of holes in his game, is something I couldn't pass up. He's good. Don't get me wrong. He's got talent, but when you put aside the mouth and the marketing skills, he's not the kind of guy I see as a champion."

Trust me the fight is still on, no way the NSAC will go against egg or swole, hell they are in their pocket. This fight is turning into a Asterisk or even a goold ole WWE/WCW type match where the outcome is being written in certain ones favor.

Maybe I'm just cynical when it comes to the UFC, but I dont think Aldo will end up fighting.

Well it will be hard pressed for him not to fight. I mean they are more than likely telling him or keep reminding him of the total pay out he could make, hell even if he had hurt his neck and it was in a cervical collar egg would probably say just look at the total ppv you can make. If it was someone with respect for fighters, instead of posting BS on twitter like see i told ppl not to panic, he should be siding more so on the side of health, there are quite a few fighters that have said even a bruised rib will stop you from training and that it could have effects on the fight yet egg is moving full steam ahead..... Aldo should sit until 100% ppv buys or not because sitting til then he still will make the amount. Mendes we all know will pop the zit called conor so that might be the reason aldo is pushing thru dollar signs instead of health reasons.

LOL the only reason he said that was because of the risk of missing the fight, it had nothing to do with a health weight cut. Gastelum has a history of missing weight and if egg allowed him back down and missed weight it would look bad on egg.

Plus if he thinks its so dangerous then why is he continuing to call for cyborg to cut the same poundage to fight rousey at 135? Hmmmm double standards are a bitch

Gastelum is a fatty who has no self control when it comes to putting down the powered donuts. Cyborg is a juiced up roid head who walks around at 170+ lbs shredded. Both can fight in a lower weight division than they currently do and be healthy doing it. The difference is Gastelum isn't a champion fighting in another organization calling out a smaller champion in another organization. Gastelum can move up a weight division and still fight in the UFC. Cyborg's division doesn't exist in the UFC.

There is no double standard and besides you were right Dana isn't thinking about fighter's health when it comes to Aldo. He's thinking about all the millions the UFC spent promoting the fight. From what I hear a lot, fighters are always hurt. They go into fights hurt all the time. It's just a matter of how hurt Aldo is and whether he thinks it's going to be significant enough to effect his performance.

As I've said before, I'm team Conor. I want him to beat Aldo. However, I don't see it happening. I think he talked himself into a big payday that comes with a big ass whippin. That being said, I think mendes is a worse matchup for him. Conor should hope Aldo can fight. Maybe he has a chance of winning a striking battle with Aldo. He has 0 chance of stopping Mendes takedowns- especially on 10 days notice. If the UFC wants to protect their Irish investment, they should push back the fight and let him have Aldo in a month or two.

I actually think Aldo isn't the same WEC crushing Aldo. He is going to try and come out and lay it on Conor. But I see Conor capitalizing and countering Aldo.

I agree, Mendes and his compact wrestler workrate... Conor needs to end it fast on some next level combo or Mendes will make his hair a new color of octagon mat.
