I don't blame the ref so much as most people are. I thought every time it came close where it should be stopped, Gavin started moving position or fighting back, which never gave the ref a great opportunity to stop. Basically I agree with Gavin, and think it was a case where he was too tough for his own good wanting to go out on his shield.

The ref or the Dr should have stopped it. The end. That's their job. Protect the fighters from taking excessive damage.

With all the talk of Cardinal, I thought I'd provide a little local insight into the man.

I've never met him, but we have a mutual friend and I've worked with guys who train under him. I can tell you he is highly respected as a man and as a BJJ BB and teacher.

Here's his lineage:
Professor Cardinal was Edmonton's 1st Black Belt in 2009 by famed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Rodrigo Munduruca, Canada's most decorated Jiu-Jitsu competitor under the legendary Royler/Rolker Gracie.

He could be all that and still a bad ref. Tucker may be a forgiving dude, but 4 broken bones in one's face doesn't just happen. The ref is there for a reason.

A good statement, guy is tough as nails, skilled and has the right attitude following a loss.

The ref let him down all the same, fighters that are too tough for their own good need a good referee in there, he was never going to quit.

Yeah, I wasn't justifying the call, just providing some background for those who thought they pulled some guy out of the crowd to ref.

He worked a lot of MFC shows too, iirc. I didn't see a lot of those cards, does anyone recall how he did then?

Gavin does us Newfies proud, I respect him for "going out on his shield" but the ref isnt there for that. Hes there to make sure that beatings like Tucker took dont happen.

It lifts me up to see how many respect how tough he is after that fight.

He'll be back. I just hope he'll be better than ever.

Too tough for own good. You're a pro athlete now not a street fighter. Shortening your career for the same outcome is not smart

Tough guy, no doubt.

But times like this remind me of Don the dragons quote long ago when he was a UFC announcer, "One thing I hope they never say about me is 'man, that Don the dragon guy, he sure can take a lot of punches'". Or something like that.

It's never good when the compliments are how great of a punishment you can take.

The problem is that those facial fractures aren't going away. His face is swelling up like a balloon every time he fights now, which probably won't be for much longer. UFC would go through fighters like razor blades if this was the normal standard. Great for Edmonton, they tolerate serious beatings and even deaths in the ring there apparently but it's not so great if you have a travelling show to produce and you need a skilled roster of combatants on hand. Then it becomes prudent to protect your assets and not use them up in one or two events. Pretty hard to build name recognition with that kind of turnover.
