A wildly popular choice of many UFC fighters including Rich Franklin, Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Juliana Lima, and interim middleweight champ Robert Whittaker, AC/DC is tied with Kanye West as the recorded third most utilized walkout artist, with at least 48 different fighters picking from 16 different songs throughout UFC history.
Walking out to AC/DC’s “Hard as a Rock,” Jake Matthews took a contentious split decision victory over Bojan Velickovic.
Sydney Giveth, and Sydney Taketh Away
The UFC was last in Sydney, Australia in 2014, where UFC Fight Night Rockhold vs. Bisping broke the record for the MOST finishes at an event with 11, with ZERO fights going the distance.
This time at Sydney, the fight card tied the record for the MOST decisions at an event in UFC history with 10, tying UFC 169, and Fight Nights 36, 84, and 101.
Getting Your Money’s Worth?
UFC Fight Night 121 broke the record for the longest fight card in UFC history, with a 3 hours, 4 minutes, 18 seconds of total fight time. Previously, no fight card had ever featured a combined fight time over three hours.
Working Overtime
This card was the first card since the TUF Latin America 2 Finale in November 2015 where ALL six fights on the main card went the distance.
No Money, No Problems
This was the FIRST 6-fight main card in company history with NO bonus money awarded to any of the 12 fighters on that main card.
The Elusive 10-10 Round
For the third round of the bout between Elias Theodorou and Dan Kelly, Judge Chris Aliendi awarded the round a rare score of 10-10.
This marked the first 10-10 score awarded in a UFC decision since Judge Albert Shen awarded a 10-10 round for round 3 of Ross Pearson vs. Chad Laprise at UFC Fight Night 85 in March 2016.
Ain’t That a Kick in the Head
Although technically contested at a catchweight because he missed weight, Ryan Benoit scored the first head kick knockout in UFC men’s flyweight history against Ashkan Mokhtarian.
Benoit also earned the 12th KO victory in divisional history as well, in a division with a KO/TKO percentage of just over 20%.
Signature Move
With Nik Lentz’s second round guillotine choke submission over Will Brooks, there have now been exactly half as many guillotine chokes performed as rear naked chokes in UFC history.
Australian Appetite
An incredible FOUR fighters missed weight for this card, and each of those fighters missed weight by at least TWO pounds. No card in UFC history ever featured more than THREE fighters missing weight.
Additionally, with the inclusion of the previously agreed-upon catchweight bout between Alexander Volkanovski and Shane Young, an unprecedented FIVE fights took place outside of normal weight classes.
Throw Your Weight Around
ALL four fighters that missed weight won their scheduled bouts. No event in UFC history had ever featured more than TWO winners that missed weight.
Don’t Shoot the Messenger
So far in 2017, women have been almost FIVE times as likely to miss weight as men, with only about 3% of men’s fights involving a fighter that missed weight, compared to almost 15% of women’s fights involving a fighter that could not make weight.
Never Say Never Again
Coming into this event, Dan Kelly had never lost a decision (5-0 going the distance), Nadia Kassem had never gone beyond 87 seconds of the first round (4 fights), Ashkan Mokhtarian had never been knocked out (15 fights), and Fabricio Werdum had competed in seven different countries but never Australia (30 fights).
That’s a New One
Surprising the audience with an unorthodox walkout song choice of “A Thousand Miles” by 2000s pop artist Vanessa Carlton, Tai Tuivasa promptly demolished Rashad Coulter with a flying knee, extending his undefeated streak to 6-0 with all six of those fights ending by first round knockout. No other recorded fighter has ever walked out to a Vanessa Carlton song before.
Some cards are more exciting than others, but that doesn't mean we can't still find some good stats in them. I prefer to come up with good stats for the main and co-main events, but sometimes that's just not possible given the results.
