You get 4 years of athletic eligibility in NCAA sports. A lot of the time freshman come in and they opt out of eligibility their first year. You are still apart of the team and practice with the team, but you're not allowed to compete. Then next year it will be your 2nd year in college academically but it will then be your first year of athletic eligibility and you will be considered a redshirt freshman.
