Here's a counterpoint: low wage jobs can offer better pay and benefits that make serving a chicken wing or selling a carburetor in this time worth it. The inflation spectre is starting to sound like the usual hostage taking.
how so? I've seen server jobs in AZ offered as "multiple openings, $12-$18/hr, +tips"
private business can't compete with "something for nothing", and Pres Biden's solution seems to be to take more in for redistribution instead of removing the incentive for citizens to "do nothing".
I've seen the same jobs in PA offered at $8/hr so I suppose it's location dependent.
that's very odd...especially since I assume the jobs in PA are a higher Cost of Living...
don't get me wrong - I think this a prime opportunity for people to negotiate hard on their compensation. Like my uncle told me "get it comin in the door"
but I don't think employers are going to get any traction until the "reflation spigot" is turned off.
I was talking to a guy on the weekend offering 25 bucks an hour and can't get hires. Granted, he also struck me as someone aderalled to the moon and a bullshitter.

I don't really care what they are being paid. If it needs to increase then it needs to increase. What we can't have is people just being cool to collect a free handout.
Eventually, the market sorts itself out. If $20/hr becomes the new entry point for low skilled labor, then that's what it is. Eventually the prices will increase and that $20 will go about as far as their $15 is going today.
A gutted supply due to Gov't meddling is no-bueno.
but what about all the doctors, nurses, architects, etc?
we don't actually increase the value of low-skilled jobs by printing money or increase minimum wage (effectively the same thing, IMAO).
we just devalue all the improvements that others have made in their life and career skills.
I like when that happens.

these workers go 24/7 without error for years, regardless of labor cost fluctuations.
The wage gap will always be there, imo. It wouldn't happen overnight, but eventually they would see the same % gap over the burger flippers that they have today. Although they won't be "banking" any additional money because everything will cost more for them too.
That's why I find the min wage argument dumb. It doesn't "fix" anything.

Upper high society makes enough money that they can hire lawyers to make sure the gov't takes as little as possible.
