AA was absolutely pivotal in my Dad's recovery. If he didnt' have that support group of friends to fall back on, he would have relapsed. Agree with Lamont Cranston @Dougie that it may feel black/white at the moment, but don't be too proud to participate in something that can be tremendously beneficial.

good to hear you are on a positive path now.

I have read that AA is good for many people as when you tell other people your goal, psychologically there is an expectation you create for yourself to reach that goal if others are counting on you. You may not then do it just for yourself but for others sake as well.

Then when you do fail at times which is bound to happen, you can have others to support you socially to lift your spirits and get you back on a positive path again.

Interesting thread...I drank the equivalent of 8 to 18 drinks nightly for about two decades. Worried about everything you mentioned as an excuse to put off quitting as long as I could. Doc told me my liver was getting fatty, plus I got bloated as fuck and no amount of exercise is going to get done when perpetually hungover that will burn all the liquid calories I was consuming.

My last drink was on the 3rd of this month. I feel fine. No shakes or withdrawls. I have a fridge full of beer and a rack full of wine and I'm not even tempted. I'm back in the gym and weight is falling off. Considering starting BJJ next month. I'm going to go 3 months sober and then see if I can have 1 or 2 socially. If I can't moderate, even once, then I'm done for good.

I feel like a schmuck for waiting so long and feel very lucky that it's been so easy.

Stick with it, brother. That's a very positive change.

Edit: That goes for both of you!!

I saw this really documentary by David Suzuki on a show called Nature of Things dealing with Alcohol Addiction and the story of a man named Mike Pond.

It takes about how AA doesn't work for many people. How Mike went and kept failing. The other members of AA would come to his bedside and try and help him through it but it wasn't working out for him and he felt guilty because he thought he was doing something wrong and feeling like a failure.

After doing researching he realized that AA didn't work for many people. His wife and him go to a labratory in Plymouth University, England where they are doing research on addiction. They find that some mice have low dopamine systems in their brain making them more prone to addiction. Since the reward system in their brain is low they look elsewhere to find pleasure.

They also do brain scans showing how the brain of someone addicted is different than someone who is not. Different areas lit up when they saw pictures of alcohol.

Under the current medical system they also realize that its an addiction that is dealt with will power than actual medication. They go to another lab where they hear of this new drug called Vivitrol. It was a shot Mike would take in his arm that was helping him lose the addiction for a certain period.

Here is a trailer:

I think op might be wrong. My former evil bitch of a mother in law literally drank herself to death yesterday and died in a pool of her own blood. Was found 8 hours later.

Suzuki is the man. We shot an interview with him and afterwards he was like "ummm can I bum a ride back to my hotel" and I was like "fuck yeah you can" and I got to hear him talk about how it was too late to stop climate chance and we were all fucked haha.

On the subject of AA though... a friend of mine had a drinking problem years back and went to AA, but he couldn't stick with it. Like me, he's a pretty hardcore agnostic/atheist and he said there were a lot of religious undertones, they talked about giving yourself over to a "higher power", trying to take the power out of your hands and talking like you're not the controller of your own destiny. That shit didn't jive with him, and I guess it doesn't work for a lot of people as they have a very high dropout rate.

That makes sense as to why it won't work for a lot of people then.
