If it's your first grow and you're just looking to get a feel for things, I'd just grab a couple packs of the feminized strains that are on sale and maybe a pack or two of something else that tickles your fancy. Some strains do better outside than others, but it's a plant, they'll all grow outdoors. I would stay away from autoflowering strains as they usually suck. Going with feminized seeds will keep you from having to identify and cull males. Is there a strand I should target? Does it really matter?
I just read that deer and squirrel eat these plants up. So I'll have to come up with an enclosure of some sort. I live in the middle of the woods with wildlife all over the place.
I was planning on doing that anyway because a chipmunk devoured a ton of my tomatoes last year. Little fucker climbed through my chicken wire.
Indoors, your biggest hurdle is probably going to be heat from the lights. LEDs definitely give off less heat than High Pressure Sodium or Metal Halide, but they still put off a decent amount of heat. Growing outdoors increases your variables tenfold, but you're probably use to dealing with most of them if you have an outdoor garden, already. Deer, squirrels, and other critters will definitely eat your plants. I haven't grown outdoors in years, but chicken wire was used with great success(chipmunks were around, but they didn't mess with the plants, although they will sometimes. If you need some ideas, here's a good place that's been around for decades: Outdoor Grows
