I've never seen an arm lock like above. I don't watch a lot of pure jits matches but it's my second interest other than watching mma. Is this used in modern day jits sebastien haff @de braco?
Yeah lots of judokas and catch wrestlers use it, trap the arm in legs and execute the shoulder lock. I've got a guy in my gym that uses this a lot.... Solid technique

usually you would keep the hands locked with the headlock to pull the head away. Raku has his arm moved out of the way to show the position of the legs in relation to the shoulder lock.

1925. Amateur Wrestling by E.C Gallagher, Coach Oklahoma A&M. Another very good book. His team was a powerhouse.

Fascinating how it's all intertwined but some purists don't like to acknowledge it at all.

Purists get mad and don't acknowledge it because they didn't have the foresight to execute the move, or they've been beaten by it and deem it "not real blah blah blah"....... Those who are more open minded put out DVD's of moves like this.

16 years of Gracie Jiu Jitsu/Sub Grappling and a 2.5+ years of Judo and Sambo exclusively have showed me that it's all intertwined. I know the Gracie's self defense system as well as I know spider guard, X guard, butterfly guard, and MMA grappling. I practice Sambo leg lock lace setups, MMA grappling techniques, and throws/trips/takedowns daily...... Only arrogant people exclude training in all areas and call it garbage, but usually it's because they're afraid to admit that there are things they don't know and need to learn.

As you can tell I've thought about this a lot LOL, now off to train

1905-3-21 Wairarapa Daily Times(NZ). Higashi was traditional JJ guy, He claimed jiudo after it became all the rage as the "new jiu jitsu"

1905 New York World. Jiudo begins trying to distance itself from Higashi and other "traditional" JJ sources.

1904-11-1 Recreation. Yabe was a Tenshin shinyo ryu nut.

1905-10-1 Black Cat. Don't be fooled by the "new" jiu jitsu nonsense. Study the "real" thing. HMMM. I've heard that somewhere before.

3-5-1905 New York Tribune

1905-1-14 Topeka State Journal

1905-1-29 NY Tribune. Higashi advertised his academy as the "modern jiu jitsu", meaning jiudo, but was actually a tenshin shinyo ryu nut or some such. Note his weight in the above article, about the average sized Japanese of the time. It was their technique that relied on strength that Helio refined.

It was a true no holds barred match and Ono had 40 pounds on Olsen. Olsen killed at least two opponents.

Not exactly directly related to jiu jitsu, very interesting look into the Japanese population of New York at the turn of the 20th century though.

1904-12-29 Quincy Daily Journal. Our old friend Higashi and the notorious gendarme Ajax Whitman

1905-3-14. Higashi was the "prominent" jiu jitsu guy

1905-4-10. Bothner hands Higashi his first loss. Higashi was good while no one was sure exactly what he was doing. The competition soon became much stiffer and his traditional jj wasn't up to it.

1905-10-17 . Little lady shows Mr happy hands what it's like. The whole thing sounds like a kayfabe publicity stunt for Higashis Academy since the arresting officer was "Ajax" Whitman, one of his students, and the attacker a prize fighter.
