I'd like to see the effect of punching with tampered gloves on the hands. They have to be mixing an adhesive along with Plaster of Paris to keep it together and crumbling. That would be hell on the hands but it obviously helps or they wouldn't be doing it.

The gloves were put on to protect the fighters hands to extend matches and promote throwing more head punches. It was almost entirely body punching and the public wanted to see headshots. They knew how to take a headshot in a way to break a guys hand. Usually the forehead.
Gloves make the superficial impact of the blow spread. The heavier the glove the worse it is on the brain but it'll look better on the outside. Helps with broken noses and teeth things like that.
