I'll be very honest. I've been working on cars for so long, I don't have much interest in projects anymore. I put a little lift on the front of my truck, and installed a not too intrusive exhaust and I'm happy with it as it is. An Aston or a Ferrari would be cool though.
I'd go with a Porsche 944 to work on a bit or maybe an r31 or an r32. Maybe an m3.

944 turbos were cool cars with a pretty good amount of potential, Never really took off though. One of my old bosses had one that he ran about 30psi on, thing would handle it mechanically, but never ran very well. I really like R32 and 33's the 31's aren't really anything to write home about though. As for M3's. e30 an 36 BMW's were really, really fucking cool cars, by the time they got to the e46's though, they just didn't have the same character. Performed amazingly, but there's more to a car than just performance.

I totes feel you on the 944. I actually was looking at one a couple of months back. Got to test drive a beautiful one at that. Only $4,000 for a perfect condition type of car.
The 32's & 33's a pretty badass. I like the way the 31 looks like, though.
How about a cressida? Or an NSX? I'd go with the '98 mod.

Yes, they lacked a lot when the e46's came out.

Cressida's have potential if ou're just using them as a chassis, but they aren't much to write home about as a factory vehicle, if you're in North America anyways. I'm a big fan of NSX's, mostly because I was a huge fan of Ayrton Senna. They're an absolute blast to drive. The interior is pretty much the same as a civic though, including the door chime, lol.

I only like them because of their body. I've yet to drive one to feel its potential honestly, but I know what you mean. :)
Yes, the NSX is a true beauty. Oh, really? I haven't seen an NSX where I'm at ever. They're rare to find like Supras. Lol.

There are plenty of Nissan options that provide you just as much of a power ceiling. Denied.

No way if you are in the USA.

You realistically have one option for that power ceiling and its the RB26dett
Need a part? Car is down while you wait on Asia to ship you something over the world's largest ocean.

So you say, no prob, go with the VQ35HR.

Here's an LS1 on the left next to the VQ on the right:

5.7 liters next to 3.5 liters
Infinite after market next to a harder to find HR that you'll have to gut anyway to make real power.

I agree on the concept, I'd never put a chevy motor in a 240z due the heritage factor in the old z car.

But same power ceiling? Not even without a ton of money and compromise.

I'm not in the USA, I'm in Canada and RB26 parts are fairly easy to come by. It is a project car after all. If you aren't working on it for a day to drive it for an hour, it's not a real project car, lol. As for the VQ35 the DE and HR have a really large aftermarket for performance parts, and only looks so gargantuan in that picture because there's a wiring harness and a starter sitting on top of it, add one to the LS and it'll start looking pretty big too. As for real power, a VQ will get to about 400hp before you need to start replacing parts. I can't really debate the cost factor, but cars and cheap don't belong in the same sentence, lol. As the old saying goes "Good, fast, or cheap. Pick 2"
