A sensational and bloody fight against Robbie Lawler may prompt Carlos Condit to retire from MMA.

Following Condit’s (30-9 MMA, 7-5 UFC) split-call loss to Lawler (27-10 MMA, 12-4 UFC) in a “Fight of the Year” candidate at UFC 195, UFC President Dana White revealed a conversation in which the former UFC interim welterweight champion said he could hang up his gloves.

Condit then appeared at the pay-per-view event’s press conference and confirmed he is weighing retirement, though he stopped short of making the decision on the spot.

Although gracious in a split-call defeat, Condit said he’d been contemplating walking away prior to the headliner.

“It’s not really an emotional thing,” he told MMAjunkie. “I’m not dejected. I don’t know. I have to evaluate, but there’s a possibility it might be my last one. We’ll see.”

“I’ve been at this for a long time, over 40 professional MMA and kickboxing fights,” he said. “I don’t know. I came up short tonight. I don’t know. Tonight was kind of a do-or-die moment for my career, I feel like, and I was all in. If I got that strap, I was going to keep fighting. If I didn’t, like I didn’t, I have to see if I can continue to do this.”

I'd like to see him keep at it a while longer. Condit seems like a smart dude and he's probably going to do well for himself outside of fighting.

Guarantee he will be a success outside of fighting. Seems like an extremely intelligent, analytical guy. That said, man I hope we get to see a rematch.

Love the nbk, don't want to see him walk away but in all seriousness, though the just bleed in me wants that rematch, I can see why he wouldn't want to put his body and brain on the line again like that. He still has his smarts, no neurological damage, he could walk away now and will never have to prove anything to anyone.

He left it on the line, I believe he won and he's a fire hall of famer, whatever his decision, he cemented his legacy as one of the baddest motherfuckers not only in his weight class but in MMA. I'm just glad I got to watch his career progression and all his fights.

I don't think he'll retire. Right before the quoted answer he was talking about living the dream because he's able to fight for a living.

I hope you're right. He's obviously still one of the elite in the WW division, and he may get an immediate rematch.

Condit's probably like everyone else, where the money just isn't good enough to go through this bullshit anymore.

Back in the day he had a gang of sponsor money coming in: Venum, Headrush, Xyience, Novadine, Muscle Pharm, Training Mask, ect. Now he has ONE sponsor that pays fuck all haha. Poor guy.

This. I hope he does what he wants to do. The guy came from wec and he rose the ranks of the UFC and fought gsp almost kod him, won the IT belt, fought a ridiculous fight again Robbie to which many thought he won. He has zero left to prove and hopefully made a lot of money to just do what he wants.

Money has never been the motivation for Condit. He didn't grow up poor or anything remotely close to that. He fights for the love of it. I can see how losing two title shots while in the prime of your MMA career might be discouraging (to say the least), especially when so many people thought you won, but he's only 31. I guess it's a question of whether all those fights on his record have taken more of a toll that we realize, and also whether Carlos in mentally drained after rehabbing his knee, going through two training camps post the knee operation, and of course that fifth round against Lawler. GSP basically called it a day after taking a similar path post knee surgery.
