My guess is he finds ways to please enough of the right people then gets a bit of support to live his shattered childhood dreams. That guy needed psychological reorienting a long time ago.

To be fair, this was a movie. And that chick is hot! Never seen the movie, but from IMDB it looks like it was Dream A Little Dream. The chick is Meredith Salenger. She's didn't turn out too bad...
