Death by "flu" is a catch-all for any death that can't really be determined.
It's like saying death of "natural causes"....

• If they were sick & died = death by "flu"
• If they were old & died = death by "natural causes".

This isn't true at all. That's a complete misunderstanding of how death certificates are filled out.

Nobody fills out a death certificate as being a death by flu without a positive influenza lab on the chart.

exactly. the only difference is how many of them actually died from the flu and not the contribution of other health conditions...that's why the CDC puts out a range of flu deaths.
