  • Without Dana? Who da fook is dat guy?

  • Yes, Conor would still be a star, but he wouldn't have risen to the level he's at now.

If Dana or the UFC deserved credit they would be flush with all those ppv draws they have signed.

er, Dana was more like the frontman for the org that hired Conor and provided him a bigger platform fairly early in his career. The other 90+ percent was all Conor.

That goes for all fighters. That 90 percent is on them and if you pull viewers, then the UFC comes out of the woodworks and "promote" you.

So fighters that are still whining over not getting "promoted" it's all on you and you're probably doing it wrong. It sounds harsh but we've seen it over and over again. Most of the work happens outside of that octagon, so should promotion and social media presence.

..and a lot of fighters, maybe most, just don't have that in them, which is why they need to hire good management that can work around that!

Yes, managment, Diaz bros spring right to mind.
yet those guys managed to make a hell of a lot more money than most fighters of their stature. Can never quite tell if there's a "crazy like a fox" factor there...

I like to imagine Conor is the fighter equivalent to cops in loose cannon cop movies.

Dana: Don’t like the way you are promoting yourself in this case, McGregor.

CM: I do what I have to do, chief. This department is full of nobodies who shy away from results

Dana: You think you’re a loose cannon? Renegade promotion will not be tolerated. Now put on your copper kit, and get out there!

CM: Funny accent and pro wrasslin gimmicks are the way

Dana: YOU’RE OFF THE CARD, McGregor!!!

Then Conor drives around, Dee gives him a backrub, but Conor then realizes its not just funny accents and pro wrassling gimmicks. No, it was in fact, all along, also being in a division where no one else has charisma. He rushed to the sauna, dropped to 145, solved the case.

Then Dana took credit for it. But it was that department that gave McGregor the tools.

UFC - and Dana by extension - deserve some credit for giving Conor a platform and recognising early on that he had star power. But it's not like Dana gave him a gimmick or orchestrated some promotional masterplan. Conor talked people into wanting to see him, like Sonnen did a few years ago. Unlike Sonnen, McGregor kept winning; the defeat to Nate Diaz didn't hurt him much because it was an entertaining fight and UFC capitalised on it with an instant rematch.

If Dana was some mastermind promoter, Demetrius Johnson would be a draw, and Stipe Miocic would be a household name. Dana likes to take credit personally where none is due, and is as focused on pushing himself as a star as he is his fighters.
