Fight Facts is a working title for my new UFC statistics project. I formerly wrote for Vice Sports, doing a similar series of pieces called Cage Captions. As of now, I am writing these new series of pieces for fun and informative purposes, and not for commercial use. All pictures have been obtained from Getty Images or USA Today Sports images, and attribution to the photographer and a link to the picture will follow each piece.
The name may have changed, and some of the stylistic features from Cage Captions will also be different, but it's the same great information presented in a slightly different format. Fightland forever!
More than ever, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. I'm developing this with the fans in mind first and foremost, and I'm always looking for ways to improve it. I have several different design ideas, so hopefully you guys can weigh-in on which ones you find more appealing.
To not hammer the first post with a ton of images right out of the gate, I'll post the stats themselves on this first post, and then the slides on subsequent posts as I put them together.
Fight Facts: UFC Fight Night Mexico City
8/6/17
Total number of UFC Fights: 4296
Total number of UFC Events: 408
Not Paid by the Hour
UFC Fight Night Mexico City featured a whopping 7 first round finishes, tying the record for the most first round stoppages in modern UFC history with 5 other events (UFC 146, TUF 1 Finale, UFC Fight Nights 14, 32, and 68).
Brothers in Arms
Despite joining the UFC two and a half years later than his older brother Anthony, Sergio Pettis has amassed the same number of wins as his brother (7).
ALL seven of Sergio’s UFC wins have come by decision.
Fish Out of Water
Canadian strawweight Randa Markos lost a split decision to Alexa Grasso, dropping her record to 1-5 when fighting outside of Canada. When fighting in Canada, Markos is undefeated at 6-0.
Paid the Price
Niko Price remained undefeated with his first round TKO over Alan Jouban. 9 of his 10 wins have come by stoppage, with 8 of those coming in the first round.
Sugar Crash
Rashad Evans has lost his last FOUR bouts, and has gone 2-6 in his last 8. Rashad’s last win came on the same night Sergio Pettis made his UFC debut in November 2013.
Rock-em Souk-ham
Despite knocking down his opponent three times in the fight, Andre Soukhamthath lost a contentious split decision to Alejandro Perez. Soukhamthath became just the SIXTH fighter in UFC history to debut with two split decision losses (Jesse Ronson, Uriah Hall, Julie Kedzie, Elizabeth Phillips, and Eric Shelton).
Dusted Him
Dustin Ortiz smashed the record for the fastest finish in UFC flyweight history with his 15 second KO of fellow Tachi Palace Fights alum Hector Sandoval. The previous record stood at 44 seconds from Fredy Serrano’s injury TKO victory over Yao Zhikui.
Lost Not Forgotten
Submission magician Rani Yahya submitted Henry Briones with a kimura, becoming just the second fighter in 2017 to submit someone with the move, and only the FIFTH fighter since 2015 to win by kimura. 75% of Yahya’s wins have come by submission (18 of 24), in 11 different ways.
Von Flue for You
Jordan Rinaldi pulled off just the FOURTH Von Flue choke in UFC history by tapping out Alvaro Herrera, becoming the first fighter in UFC history to use the submission whose name does not rhyme with Von Flue (Jason Von Flue, Ovince Saint Preux).
Watch That Weight
Since implementing the early weigh-in procedures at UFC 199, 29 fighters have missed weight, with 8 of those occurring in women’s divisions (27.6%). Women’s bouts have accounted for 70 of the 593 fights since UFC 199 (11.8%).
