I've been going through all my old mma events and watching them in chronological order, up to 2006.
I'm watching pride bushido 12, 8/27/2006, and I saw shinya aoki use rubber guard on his opponent, and I can't recall anybody using it in an mma match prior to this date.

Would have been Rogan v. Snipes, if Snipes hadn't committed tax evasion to avoid the fight.

Great fucking post man
Jason Black was no fucking joke at the time too
I miss prime Aoki, dude was a straight g in there

I think he might be the first to get me really looking into the 10th planet system and it might have been this fight (I can't remember honestly)

Fuck I miss that guy

i thought I remembered Nino Schembri using a 'rubber guard' against Sakuraba in Pride. Maybe somebody else. But it wasn't long after I got out of the USAF in 2000

I feel that in today's mma a lot of skill and technique has really gone out the window. We have brawlers, wrestlers and that's about it. You just don't see good bjj anymore or even really solid good standup. Guys who think they would be good in boxing would get fooled up badly.

This.

Nino's definitely the first i saw using it. But probably utilised well before that at some old school shows in Brazil.

Imo this guy has the best mma jujitz

Rani Yahya uses a purist jiu jitsu, iminari uses jitsu non stop to attack legs.
Ryan hall and Gary tonon are ones to keep an eye on as they transition to mma, hopefully they don't go the same path as sergio moraes and suddenly think they're a pro kickboxer after a few months training stand up.

Nice vid. And agree on Hall and Tonon. Excited to see how Tonon will transition to MMA. Hall has already proven himself to be very dangerous in MMA...he just needs to go hard on his striking.

Truth is, there is a lot of high quality BJJ in MMA today, issue is that holding someone securely in your guard, avoiding punches, and limiting your opponent is considered "boring" by the Ultimate Fighting fans, so much so that guys compromise their defense and get shelled up.

BJJ was never about offense first, defense second.. it is about defend, create angles/transitions to look to escape or sweep/reverse to a better position, and along the way if something presents itself to get broken or choked, do it.

I love modern BJJ, but what's old is new... The concepts of the rubber guard has been around long before Bravo, he's just intelligent enough to know how to market/brand it to a bunch of guys who think they're doing new stuff.

I definitely disagree with this. If you took any top fighter from even 10 years ago and put them against even the #10-15 ranked fighters and they would get pieced up badly on the feet. The grappling is also overall better, but there are fewer ground specialists.

I kind of miss the days when someone would grab rubber guard and Joe would be unable to contain his excitement..

"MISSION CONTROL!!! He's achieved MISSION CONTROL!!!!!"

i spoke to eddie about this years ago. he said he first saw renzo grab hold of his foot for a second from guard in the early prides, and started to develop it from there.

dunno which one he meant tho. i never checked

He used Williams guard a few times in the Kikuta fight.

Yes came in to say Nino Elvis and Aoki.

The rubber guard was a nice fad, it was cool to see Aoki hit those subs but then it became people would just go to mission control and stall.
