My dad and his brother will go months without talking to each other. They don't dislike each other, and each has always known the other will be there if he called and said he needed him. But they are both just, I don't know, independent or private or something.

That pretty much describes me and my parents.

We live across the country from each other. They live in a very rural area. They're both independent and raised me to be the same.

We call each other when needed or just to say hi a few times a year, occasionally message each other on FB when it isn't anything time sensitive, and hang out once or so a year when I go visit since their idea of traveling is an RV trip to another town or the state adjacent to them.
