Henderson: Dern ‘will be bigger than Ronda Rousey'

Benson Henderson's MMA Lab has long been one of the top fight camps in the world. However one of the team's brightest stars is still in the infancy of her mixed martial arts career.

At the age of 23, jiu-jitsu prodigy Mackenzie Dern showcased her vast potential at Legacy FC 58 in July, dominating Kenia Rosas to win her professional debut with a one-sided decision. Now, with her first step out of the way, Henderson sees big things ahead in Dern's fighting future.

"She will be bigger than Ronda Rousey before Ronda Rousey lost," Henderson said Monday on The MMA Hour. "She's going to be huge. She's going to be big. She has an excellent work ethic.

"Go look her up, she is a multiple-time jiu-jitsu world champion. She's won ADCC. She's won Abu Dhabi. She's won Worlds. She's the current No. 1 ranked female jiu-jitsu practitioner on the planet. She has an amazing work ethic. She's an amazing athlete. She definitely needs to work on her MMA skills, but her ground game is phenomenal. Any woman on the planet goes to the ground with Mackenzie and Mackenzie is going to tap her, or dominate her like she did her first opponent."

Again, NO! The one thing that got Ronda noticed right from the beginning was finishing her fights in the first round. Dern's first fight was a decision, lots of fighters have had excellent resumes in BJJ but not been able to submit or deal with top flight wrestlers..

Mackenzie is a BEAST on the ground, she has better BJJ than most guy fighters.... Hell she's beaten Gabi Garcia who is 200 pounds (Dern competed at 127-132). There aren't a lot of strong grapplers in the UFC 115 women's division, she could definitely skyrocket up that division, however when she faces other strong grapplers like JAG or Claudia who maybe able to stuff her game a bit, she'll have a long night.

Her obvious weakness is her striking game right now, but she's in a solid camp, and has a great base to start her career with. Will she be as big or bigger than Ronda? No, no woman will be.... But she will be a popular champ who draws good PPV numbers (if and when she gets there) for pulling out crazy submissions.

Not a chance: Ronda's judo takedowns (before Count Chocula ruined her) were the definitive element to her game, not the armbar. Who cares if Dern is such a superlative grappler if she can't take down someone with elite striking?

She didn't beat Gabi in any way that merits much celebration. She won on a point deduction. Granted, no one had managed to do even that for years, but she basically managed to hold an early lead mostly by not getting passed and hanging on with all she had.

Dern is a great BJJer, but imo her wrestling isn't strong enough to get it to the mat against other WMMA stars. Her takedown game is more judo oriented, but gi dependent unlike the upper body clinch game Ronda used. I feel like she's mostly a guard puller.

115 would be a tough cut and that's a stacked division. I'd rather see her go into the new 125 lb division and become its face.

Ronda was like a pitbull going after that armbar. She also had the combination of being outspoken and controvercial. It didn't hurt that she was like an 8/10 when in fight shape.

All those factors made her Ronda Rousey and I seriously doubt Dern will ever reach that level of stardom. She may be equally as talented but if she doesn't fixate on finishing her opponents immediately like Ronda and if she doesn't talk the game that Ronda talked.... She won't be the next Ronda.
