"I would prefer any other referee but him," Jones said Tuesday.

McCarthy, a former Los Angeles police officer, has officiated mixed martial arts since UFC 2 and helped author the current Unified Rules which oversee the sport. He's also been the third man in on several of Jones' biggest bouts, including matchups with Alexander Gustafsson and Vitor Belfort.

Regardless, Jones said there were several factors which made him request an official besides McCarthy.

"It's been a mixture of many things throughout the years," Jones said. "Just the energy. I don't feel like we have the best energy. It's an accumulation of some of the things that happened during some fights and just personal interactions. I just don't feel as, you don't need anything stacking up against you when you're fighting a guy a great fighter like DC."

Jones also believes that if he was in McCarthy's shoes, and knew one of the fighters involved didn't want him there, he'd voluntarily recuse himself from the fight.

"He [officiates] probably once a week somewhere," Jones said. "For me, this is my life, this is my story, this is my legacy. This is everything to me, and if I don't agree with his energy that he brings to the fight, if I was him, I wouldn't want to be a part of it. You know what I mean? If you're not welcome, why would you even want to be part of someone's big night who doesn't want you there. I would say, ‘you know, I'll back out of this one, I don't need to be a part of this one.'"

I remember vitor trying to kick his head off when he came out on all fours like he's known to do. He dodged the kick then looked at big John and big John said something like "you're just playing the game, now fight"... Something like that at least.

Jones is a dirty fighter and this fight needs a ref that knows what he's looking at and takes no bullshit.

I do remember that, and BJM has been publicly vocal about it in the past. Thanks, you just reminded me of that. I couldn't remember what it was that BJM had spoken about regarding Jones.

Has he ever mentioned the eye pokes or his personal stuff?

Also, I just saw the "dirty fighter" line, and I disagree. I think he's the most effective fighter ever, and I kinda see the gripes about him, but I think the eye pokes are accidental, and I think the kicks to the knee are an interesting gripe in a sport where we reward the infliction of brain damage.

Bjm has called him on the eyepokes before as well. Of course he doesn't want bjm, he's trying to pull a mayweather and get a ref that lets him bend the rules.

good for jon. bjm is an attention whore plain and simple. he will be badgering jon all night about an open hand which is not against the rules. here's the solution - tell both of them the first eye poke is 1 point. 2nd is 2 points, 3rd is dq or something like that. guarantee bjm will make up his own rules as he goes.

I played sports growing up and in my experience having refs keep you informed about how they're perceiving your actions is a real positive. I've never heard an athlete say otherwise. Esp because sometimes, honestly, you're in the moment and don't know what you're doing and would like to know if you're walking the line to getting a foul/penalty/technical, etc. or not.

Regardless if his hand being open is legal or not, BJM informing fighters of his perception of their actions is good. It let's the fighters know where they are on the line.

I think you're being a bit dramatic here and in the other threads concerning bjm

Big John clearly has a personal vendetta against Jones. I've never seen him referee anyone else's fights this way. It's like he wants Jon to lose or something.

Jon should have every right as champion to make one referee change request.

i dont try to be dramatic its just my opinion after seeing him ref many fights. if you tell the fighter to close their hand each time they reach out that's going to get into their head. now they're focusing on keeping a closed fist when finding distance. the ref is there to make sure the rules are being followed and the fighters are safe. he likes to make up his own rules and say an open hand is not permitted when there is no rule against it.

He now gets a tag team of Kim Winslow and Steve Mazagatti. Both wearing one eye patch each so that they have a pair of eyes whilst being tied together like in a three legged race.

Besides mazzspaghetti just diabolically making the wrong decision, McCarthyism is always trying to control a fight and while he doesn't fuck up a lot, he does get too involved which could have an "impact" or "not" have an impact

Perhaps. But there is a fine line between some referees blatantly ignoring a problem and having no legit control over a fight and a referee in control of the fighters. I would rather see a little extra talk and a little extra interaction to avoid me screaming at the TV when a referee just passively ignores fence grabs, eye pokes, grabbing gloves. These days the quality of refereeing is up significantly. But with BJM in the ring I always feel like if he said break they'd break. Nobody else, maybe Herb, maybe but I aint 100% convinced. That dude with the insane beard aint got a hope in hell of controlling anyone.

Having said that in the Theodoro fight BJM fucked up totally. But he's refereed like a bazillion fights. This will happen.

I just find mcdarthy very strong, which is fine, but when he thinks he knows everything I have a problem.....I qualify this by saying I'm a Jones supporter......

Yea I actually agree with that. He dont know everything. His copper background comes through, the job not the metal.

I am also a Jones supporter. But I am against poking people in the eye more than I am a Jones supporter. Changing the referee is not the answer.
